UNITED STATES FRANK J. SENG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COUCH-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 638,764, dated December Application filed April 29, 1899. Serial No. 714,993. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. Be itknown that I, FRANK J. SENG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couch-Legs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel Construction in a couch-leg for bed-lounges, the object being to provide a device of this character which can be readily attached and detached and which is held in place by means of a plate so placed that the couch is not disfigured thereby and which when said couch is closed can be detached and placed inside; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a couch or bed-lounge opened for use as abed and supported at one side upon couchlegs constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is aview in elevation of the plate for receiving and holding one end of the leg. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In bed-lounges or couches it is desirable that the wooden framework should remain intact and not be marred by gains to receive fixtures for holding removable legs, not only on account of appearance, but likewise on account of the expense involved. To this end I provide a very simple leg and device for holding the same which can be readily attached Without the necessity of gaining the framework and which is likewise very inexpensive, besides being very durable and efflcient.
My device consists of a plate A provided with slot B, below which said plate is cut to form a lip O, which is bent outwardly and forms a shoulder adapted to engage one flange of the leg D. Said leg D consists of a strip of sheet metal the lower end of which is provided with a flange E, adapted to rest upon the floor, and at its upper end with a flange F, adapted to enter said slot 13 in said plate A. Said plateA is adapted to be secured to the inner face of the outer side rail of the up per member of the couch by means of screws passing through the perforations G in said plate A, so that the edge of the lip O is flush with the edge of said side rail. The flange F of said leg D is adapted to pass over said edge of said rail, through said slotB in said plate A, and over said lip 0, thus being held firmly in a horizontal position and prevented from turning in any direction. Said slot B and lip C also serve as a clutch to hold said leg from being withdrawn while said couch is in the position shown in Fig. 1, as the weight bear ing on said flange F causes the latter to bear with its upper face against the upper wall of said slot B and with its lower face upon the sharp edge of the lip O. Y
My device has also the advantage that it can be applied irrespective of the extent to which the upholstered top of the couch bulges out at the sides. 7
I claim as my invention 1. In a bed-lounge or couch, the combina tion with the frame, having side rails, a plate mounted upon the inner face of one of said side rails and provided with a slot and a projecting shoulder, of a leg provided with a flange adapted to pass over said side rail and enter said slot and engage said shoulder and said side rail, substantially as described.
2. In a bed-lounge or couch, the combination with a plate adapted to be secured to the inner face of one of the rails of the frame,- and provided with a slot and out below said slot to form a lip bent outwardly from said plate to form a shoulder projecting inwardly from said plate, of a leg provided with a flange adapted to enter said slot and rest upon said shoulder and engage the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affi x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. SENG.
