AARON COLEMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,924, dated November 28, 1899.
Application filed June 3,1899- Serial No. 719,233. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON COLEMAN, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in suspenders whereby a strong and durable rear suspender-end is produced, capable of readily accommodating itself to the various positions of the wearer, especially when the latter bends sidewise, the end being so constructed as to avoid undue strain on the suspenders or the buttons upon which the ends are fastened.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. v
The improved rear suspender-end is formed with a single cord or band A, having portions doubled up to form buttonhole-straps A A the doubled-up portions being bound together by sets of clips B B, of which the clips B are near the lower ends of the straps to provide buttonholes A The cord A extends from the clips B upward to form open loops A and A having a slidable connection with eyes 0 0, held on loops 0 attached to the rear ends of shoulder-straps D D, as is plainly indicated in the drawings. The inner ends of the loops A A are formed into the curved middle connecting portion A of the cord A, and this portion A is free to slide in a flexible connection E, in which is also free to slide the lower middle portion A leading from the clips B B and forming part of the inner strand of the buttonhole-straps A A The flexible connection E is formed with two eyes E E pivotally connected with each other by a link E said eyes E E forming free passages for the middle portions A A of the cord A, so as to allow a ready passage of the said middle portions whenever the wearer of the suspenders bends sidewise, to relieve the suspenders and the buttons of undue strain.
The entire construction of the rear suspender-end is very simple and durable, and the parts are so arranged and attached one to the other that they are not liable to get out of order or become disarranged when in use.
The clips B serve to limit the movement of the parts A, A, and A by contacting with the eye E when buttoning the back straps to the trousers or when the body of the wearer is extended on one side. This is an advantage, as when one of the ends A or A is pulled upon the other is prevented from passing out of reach. The clips B also serve to hold the outside portions of the cord A near to each other, thus preventing or lessening the liability of the shoulder-straps slipping from the wearer.
By doubling the ends of the cords A and A the strains are divided and a much stronger device results.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A pair of suspenderscomprising shoulderstraps, a suspension-piece consisting of two eyes, an endless strap or cord connected with the shoulder-straps and with said piece so as to form four radiating loops, two of which loops are open and extend directly to the shoulder-straps, and portions of cord in each of the other two loops being bound together by suitable means from a point near the suspension-piece to a point near the end of such loops, substantially as described.
AARON COLEMAN.
