Be it known that I, N. A. WrtIGHT, of Prairie du Chien, in the county of Crawford, and State of' Wisconsin, haveinvented a new and improved Holder for hnrch Pews, Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereofl which will enable those skilledin the lart to make and use' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The present invention relates to a device more-especially intended for nse in churches, halls, lecture-i'ooms, and other public buildings, andv is to be applied to the backs oi` church pews, settees, Ecc., its purpose being to hold a hat, cap, 'or other article of wearing apparel, or book, Ste; belonging to any person or persons occupying or sitting in such pew, or on such settee, Ste.

In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved holder for church pews, 85e., is illustrated- Figure l being a View orelevatiou ofthc back of a church pew, having my improved holder for the hymnd books, Ste., applied thereto; and' Figurev 2, a vertical section taken in the plane of the line x as, ig. l.

A, in the drawings, represents the back of a church pew, to which are shown three of my improved holders marked B, C. and D; these holders being slightly diiferentin form or shape, but operating in the same uianncr. They are each 'm-doof a spring-band, E, by which, with screwsor other suitable fastening devices, they are secured to the back of a pew, with the said band'continued in length, either by attaching thereto a woodext'cnsicn piece, F, as shown in the one marked B, with a right angular-shaped shoulder or end, Gr, resting against the back of the pew, or by lengthening out the metal' band with a corresponding right-angular shaped bend in its outer end. With a holder of the form above described, it' a bool( is to be held by it, the holder is first pulled away from the pew back, so that the book can be placed upon its right-angular end,'when, allowing the holder to spring back, it will thereby firmly grasp and bind the said book to the bach of the pew, the same eifect or action taking place if a hat or cap is placed under and to be held by the holder. For thc purpose of enabling the tension of the spring-band to be regulated, in lieu of fixing such baud directly to the back of the pew, I secure it thereto through a clasp, I-I, in which, by its longitudinal slot, a, moving upon a stud or pin, of such clasp, the band can be drawn out or pushed in at pleasure, and thus its elasticity or tension adjusted at pleasure.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The spring-holder C, when adjustable through the slot a, in the socket H, to regulate the tension or" the spring, when combined and arranged as and for the purpose specified;
