'EO ALL WHOM T MAY CONCERN:
,Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Srnrronn, of Saybrook, in the county oi' Middlesex, and State oi' Connecticut, have invented n. new and improved Elevating and Self-Dumping Garbage endAsl1-Box and do hereby dechire that the following is n full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to moire und use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming n part of this speci- Scation, :in which Y Figure il in a Side sectional view oi' my invention, taken in the linec: I, fig. 2.
Figure 2 is an external front view of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object ot" this invention is to obtain a receptacle for garbage and ashes, which may be placed on the edge of n sidewall; in front of residence, and not have any unsightly appearance, and be capable of having its 4 contents ldumped by a single person into a. cart with the greatest facility.
A representan case, in whichv the garbage and ash-box is fitted or enclosed. This case is oi cest iron, and may be of any neat or ornamental pattern; and it is provided with a. lid or cover, B, a taclicd by a hinge. This case is east with a suitable base, a, and ahollow post, C, dependent therefrom, the p )st passing through :i hole in the hugging down into the earth, and the base u resting or bearing on the agging, as shown clearly in iig. 1. D represente the garbage or ash-box, which may be constructed of sheet or ons` metal. It' of the former material it may have a cast-iron rim at the top. The sha-pe of the box D conforms to that of the ease A; and
`the bottom of D .is connected by n hinge or joint, b, to a rod, E, n'hiclrslide's freely within the hollow post C of the ca'se'A. This. rod E is cast with a vertical rack, c, in which n pinion, F, gears, said pinion being on n shaft, G, which. in tted in a bearing, (1 cast with the case A. One end of the shaft G is formed witha. square, to receive :L crank,`, by which the shaft is turned. is e chain, one end of which is attached to the box D near its centre, the other end being attached to the bott-om of a chamber', @,'cast with the ease A.. The top of the garbage or :ish-bon: is provided with a rim, j', to rest on the top of the case A, and the lid orcover B', when down, rests on the rin-i Garbage or ashes are thrown int-o the box i) at any time by raising the lid or cover B; and, when the contents of D are to be removed, the shaft G is turned by means of the crank H, the cart,
shown in red, being backed up in front' of the case A. By turning the shaft G in the proper direction, as indicated by :irren: l, the box D is raised, in consequence of the pinion Fgearing into the rack Ao of the rod E; und, -when the bottom of the box D nearly reaches the t-op of the case A, the chain I will be fully distended, and niil check thel ascent oi the box D, causing the latter, as the rod E is forced upward, to tilt or dump over the top ot' a', and discharge its contents into the cart, as shown in red in iig. 1. On turi ing the shaft G in the reverse dii'ectioinvthe box D will turn np to a vertical posit-ien, and descend Within the care A. By this simple arrangement it will be seen that garbage and ashes may be kept .vithin o. covered receptacle on the edge ofthe sidewalk Without any trouble or inconvenience whatever, and the contents removed or dumped into a cnrt by :i single peron with. the greatest facility. f
Hoving thus described my invention, I clniin as new, and desire 'to secure by Letters Potent- A garbage or ash-box, placed Witliin o, case provided with a. iid or cover, and arranged., as herein shown- 4ond described, to admit of being elevated :intlv tilted or dumped, in order that its contents may be discharged into a cart, substantially as described. v
' il. yhe rod il, attached to the bottom of the garbage or ash-box D, and provided with the rack c, the hollow pari; C of the case A, inwhich the rod I works, the pinion F on shaft G, and the chain all arranged to operate in the manner enbstantiolly as' and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my inventionhsigned by me this ,7th inf of August, 1861i. y
' C. W. STAFFORD.
