Description
Patented Nov. 7, I899.
"(No Model.)
. UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. WVOODS, OF ERNEST, MISSOURI.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,608, dated November *7, 1899. Application filed March I4, 1899. Serial ITO-709,072. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. WOODS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ernest, in the county of Dade and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olevises; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to clevises, and more particularly for use in connection with plows and agricultural machinery of that general type.
The object of the invention is to provide a clevis the parts of which may be quickly and easily adjusted without the liability of their becoming entirely separated and in which should the clevis-pin break or drop from its place and be lost the draft-link will not become detached.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a plowbeam. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the cross-clevis and its draft-link.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the end of the plow-beam, 2 one member of the clevis, and 3 the other or cross end of the clevis. The member 2 of the clevis is bolted into the end of the plow-beam, and consists of two parallel parts a and I), provided with transverselyalined apertures c and having formed on their outer parallel edges longitudinal ribs or shoulders d and ontheir lowerends horizontal shoulders e. The other part or crossclevis is arranged at right angles to the part 2 of the clevis and is provided with a horizontal row of vertical apertures f, with the longitudinal shoulders g, and with the end shoulders h. This part is also provided with parallel ears 2', that embrace the vertical sides of the clevis 2 and are formed with shoulders j, that engage the vertical shoulders of the clevis.
4 denotes the clevis-pin that connects the cross-clevis to that part of the clevis secured to the plow-beam.
5 denotes the draft-link, and 6 the pin that connects it to the section 3 of the clevis. The
draft-link, constructed as shown, is provided with shoulders 7, that engage the horizontal extended shoulders of the section 3 of the clevis.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
It is evident that in the adjustment of section 3 on section 2 the pin must be withdrawn; but this withdrawal will not permit the section 3 to drop from engagement with sec tion 2, as the vertical transverse shoulders of section 2 will prevent the separation of these parts. Again, when it is desired to adjust the draft-link on the section 3 of the clevis there is no danger of the whiffletree, to which the draft-link is attached, becoming disengaged from the plow-beam, for the shoulders of the draft-link engaging the longitudinal shoulders of the section 3 of the clevis will prevent the draft-link becoming accidentally disengaged.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a clevis, the combination with the section 2, provided with vertical rows of registering apertures, and with a vertical and horizontal flange as shown; of a section 3, provided withlinks formed with shoulders adapted to engage the shoulders aforesaid, a pin inserted through said links, and through the apertures of the section 2 of the clevis, and a draft-link connected to the section 3 of the clevis, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the section 2 of the clevis, of the section 3 of the clevis adjustably secured to the section 2, and providedwith a horizontal row of apertures, and withlongitudinal and end shoulders, and the draft-link provided with shoulders, adapted to engage the aforesaid shoulders, and a pin inserted through the draft-link and one of the holes of said section 3 of the clevis, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN C. WOODS. Witnesses:
Mrs. H. A. NIEMAN, J. A. Rnucx.
