To all whom, it ntcty cancer-n:
Be it known that 1, JOHN EDWIN KEYT, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates for Cooking Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the fire place or bed for cooking stoves or ranges, and is especially designed to vary the area of the fire-box in such a manner that though less fuel may be used,thereby creating an economy in the same, still it is so arranged and constructed that the heat therefrom when so reduced is evenly distributed throughout the heating-chambers of the stove or range.
My object is attained by the device shown in the drawings herewith, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an ordinary stove or range with my improvement attached and shown in position when the grate-surface is reduced. Fig. 2 is a top plan of Fig. 1, partly broken away.
A represents thefire-box of the stove or range as ordinarily constructed. B is a frame fitting within said box and having a partition or supporting cross-bar O at about its center, upon which turns in suitable bearing the inner trunnion a of the ordinary grating D, the outer trunnion of which passes through the front wall of the stove or range and terminates in a square end I) to facilitate the shaking or turning of the grating when cleaning or brightening the fire.
E is my improved grating for varying the grate area, composed of two nearly parallel edges by a plate (1. This grating is supported at the rear of the fire-box A upon swinging trunnions e e, which have bearings upon the longitudinal sides of the supporting-frame B. The trunnion 6 projects outwardly through the side wall of the stove or range and terminates in a square end, to which a wrench may be applied when changing its position within the fire-box A. The front grate is supported at its lower edge upon a latch f, swingingfrom the inner side of the central bar C.
As shown in the drawings my device is in its raised position, thereby cutting off about one-half the grate-s11 rface within the fire-box, the rear grate o in this case folding back close against the rear wall of the stove or range, the front grate c forming a vertical division Within the fire-box, and the connecting-plate d between them forming a top nearly parallel to the stove-top, leaving, however, a combustion-space between. In this position of my improved grating it will be seen that the fire-box of the stove or range has been reduced to half its entire capacity, using that much less fuel, without lessening the depth of the coal-bed. As it will be seen, the coal-bed receives the proper amount of underventilation through the meshes of the grate. D and a plentiful supply of fresh air above the coal-bed through the meshes of the swinging grate c of my device.
When it is desired to use the full area of grate-surface within the fire-box A, the latch f is swung out, releasing the grating E, which drops down into the ash-pit of the stove or range, swinging upon its trunnions e 6 until the upper edge 1 of the grate c rests upon the supporting cross-bar O, in this way making a level continuous grating at the base of the fire-box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the fire-box of a stove, a grate, an auxiliary double grating the grate members of which are connected to each other by an impervious plate, said grating pivoted in the fire-box in such relation to the first-named grate that when the grating is swung downward one of its members extends the grate area in the fire-box, and when the grating is swung upward the other of its members affords horizontal draft-openings into the reduced fire-bed, while the impervious plate cuts off any upward draft within the grating.
2. In combination with the fire-box of a stove and a pivoted grate of ordinary capacity, a double grating composed of two substantially parallel members connected by an impervious plate, such double grating being pivoted in the fire-box on an axis at right angles to the pivot of the ordinary grate substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In combination with the fire-box of a stove, a supporting-frame therein, a grate pivoted to said frame, a second grate pivoted upon an axis at right angles to that of the first-named grate, and a third grate substantially parallel to the second and connected to it by an impervious plate, the second grate being adapted to be swung into the horizontal plane of the first-named grate in order to extend the grate area, at which time the third grate supplies vertical openings to furnish a draft to the first-named grate.
4. In combination with the fire-box of a stove, a supporting-frame therein, an osci1lating grate carried by the frame, a double grating pivoted in said frame, a cross-bar for supporting one member of said double grating when the latter is positioned to extend the grate area, and a movable latch for supporting the other member of said double grating at the time when the latter is swung into position to reduce the grate area substantially as described.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a frame having a cross-bar, a grate journalcd in said frame, and an auxiliary grating pivoted in said frame upon an axis transverse to the length of said frame, the said auxiliary grating being composed of two substantially parallel grated members connected by an impervious plate, and the whole adapted to be supported within the fire-box of a stove, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
