HENRY G.,.WI TTBOLD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MACHINE FOR WINDINKE` EVERGRIEENS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 634,050, dated October 3, 1899.
Application iiled December 27,1897. Serial No. 663,666. v(No model.)
T all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY G. WrrrBoLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illirnois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for VindingEvergreens; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. A i
This invention relates to improvements in that class of machines or devices used in winding or Wiring evergreens to be made into wreaths, dro., and has for-its object to provide a machine that Will 'greatly facilitate this kind of work and also bind the evergreens together more uniformly than is possible by hand.
The drawing shows a figure which is a side elevation and part section of amachine em bodying the improved featuresf A represents the supporting-frame or pedestal on which the principal part of the machine is mounted. A 'rotatable tube Bis journaled in the tcp of the frame and hasa driving-pulleyB' mounted thereon near the front or feed end. This forming-tube is made ilaring at each end to facilitate the ingress and egress of the rope of evergreeus C passing therethrough. A core-tube c is adjustably mounted in the upper end of a standard a. The front end of this tube extends some way into the forming-tube and stops shorttherein. rIhis core-tube is much less in diameter than the forming-tube, so as to leave an annular space a2 for the free passage of the evergreens.
A shelf a3 is attached to the standard c and has a ball of cord a4 rotatably supported thereon. The cord a5 as it unwinds from its spool passes through the tube ct and forms the core in the operation of binding the evergreens togetherin a continuous rope, A wirecarrying spool bis rotatably mounted on the inside of the driving-pulley. B. The wire et,
reeled oft' from the carrying-spool, passes in at the front end of the forming-tube and winds i spirallyaround the evergreensandbindsthem together in the rope or Wreath form shown.
At the rear end of the machine is located a Winding-drum D, mounted on a shaft b2 and journaled in a supportingstand b3. A bandpulley b4. is mounted on shaft b2. Companion 'guide-sheaves CZ d arejournaled in the frame. A larger driving-'sheave E is mounted on the rear part of the forming-tube. The required motion for rotating the winding-drum D 'is transmitted through the medium of a driv- E on guide-sheaves d CZ and around the bandpulley h2, mounted on the drum-shaft. A guide-roller G is placed intermediate between the machine and the Winding-drum and serves to support the moving rope of ever-greens.
In working, the branches or twigs of the evergreens are placed by hand on the core'- tbe and the core-cord made East to the standing end of the-evergreen rope and the end of -t-he binding-wire'given aturn around and fastened, so as to draw and unwind from its spool.v When the machine is once started, the core-oord and the binding-wire unwind by the action of the machine, the operator merely feeding the evergreens in at the front end of the forming-tube, making the operation continuous, the linished product being drawn through the forming-tube and coiled on the winding-drum. The `Winding-drum may be dispensed with and the product drawn through by hand.
Having thus described myinvention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv
l. In a machine of the kind described, the Avcombination with-the supporting-frame, of a rotatable formingatube, journaled therein, and a core-tube, having oneend extending linto the forming-tube, substantially as de` scribed.
2./ The combination with the supportingframe, of a rotatable forming-tube, journaled therein, a driving-pulley, mounted on said tube, and an adjustable core-tube, having ing-belt F, running from the driving-sheave one end extending into the forming-tube, the binding-Wire and the core-cord being antomatically drawn through their respective tubes in the operation, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the supportingfl'ame, of a rotatable forming-tube, journaled therein, a. driving-pulley, a core-tube, t Wiring-spool, rotatably mounted in said drivingxo pulley, 2t drivng-sheave, mounted on the
