UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEOFFREY B. LEI-IY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
APPARATUS FOR HOLDING AND SLICING BUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,898, dated April 11, 1899.
Application filed January 16, 1899- Serial No. 702,268. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEOFFREY B. LEHY, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Apparatus for Holding and Slicing Butter, of
which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representin g like parts. This invention has for its object to construct an apparatus for holding and slicing butter whereby slices of even thickness may be removed for table use.
In accordance with this invention the box is made with an opening at one end, and a quantity of butter is worked or molded into the form of a brick and introduced into the open end of the box. The side walls of the box at said open end terminate flush, so that when the brick of butter is withdrawn from the box, so as to project a short distance, said open end of the box will serve as a guide for a knife which will be employed to slice the butter. The brick of butter will be placed upon a strip of 'cloth or paper or other material, and said material adheres to it, and said strip of material has a tab at one end of the brick of butter, which is accessible when the box is opened at the end to be engaged by the fingers and used as a pull to draw the brick of butter from the box any desirable distance in order that the knife may be operated and guided by the end of the box to slice the butter.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of an apparatus for holding and slicing butter embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a view of the brick of butter removed from the box; Fig.
being open.
3, a detail showing the sliding end piece of the box; Figs. 4 and 5, modifications showing a pivoted end piece for the box.
The box will be composed of a top a, bottom 1), side walls 0, and an end wall atone end of the box, the opposite end of the box At the open end of the box the two side walls 0 0 will terminate flush, and the top a will terminate a short distance back to be introduced to close the open end of the box.
In lieu of closing the end of the box by means of a sliding cover a pivoted end wall d may be provided, as shown in Figsml and 5.
The butter, which is worked or molded into brick form, as represented at f, Figs. 2 and 3, is placed upon a strip 9 of suitable material such, for instance, as cloth or strong paperwhich adheres to it, and said strip g extends the entire length of the brick and has at one end a tab g, which projects beyond the brick at the open end of the box. The strip 9 in addition to extending along the bottom of the brick from end to end will also preferably extend up across the. rear end of the' brick and along the top for a suitable distance, thereby obtaining a firm hold upon the vbrick of butter in such manner that by pulling upon the tab g said brick will be easily withdrawn from the box. The brick maybe withdrawn from the open end of the box any suitable distance, and when thus withdrawn (and if necessary the top portion of the strip turned back) a knife may be employed to remove thin slices of butter from the brick, said knife being guided by the side walls 0 c at the open end of the box.
' By making the tab g flexible it may be more easily engaged by the fingers and also will be easily manipulated to enable the knife to completely sever the slices at the bottom of the box without cutting off the tab; By
extending the strip g the entire length of the brick it will be seen that as the slices are removed and the brick consequently shortened the tab has always a firm connection with the brick to enable it to be withdrawn from the box.
I do not desire to limit my invention to any particular form of strip so long as it is provided with a tab or equivalent means which may be readily engaged by the fingers and operated to pull the brick out of the box and so long as it extends the entire length of the brick and adheres thereto.
I claim-- In an apparatus for holding and slicing butter, a box having an open end, the side walls of which, at said open end terminate flush to thereby serve as a guide for a knife, the strip 9 attached to the material contained in said box for its entire length provided With the tab g, by means of which said material may be Withdrawn more or less from the open end of the box, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof i have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 10 two subscribing witnesses.
GEOFFREY B. LEHY.
