SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,569, dated April 4:, 1899.
Application filed'0ct0ber 13, 1898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. VAN NAMEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Framing-Squares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to framing-squares for use in framing different kinds of roofs and is adjustable so as to give the bevels and cuts of any and all kinds of roofs from one to The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efiiciency in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a framing-square constructed in accordance with my invention, the blades being shown opened. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the device being shown closed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same.
In the 'saiddrawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a casing consisting of two rectangular plates of metal or other suitable material connected together at the ends by set-screws 2, which also serve as the pivots of blades, hereinafter described. 011 each side these plates are graduated at the edges, as shown. Pivoted at one end of the casing is a folding blade 3, formed with a number of radial lines 4. These lines begin at a point at or near the fulcrum of the blade and terminate at one of the edges of the blade and are numbered consecutively. By adj usting this blade until one ofsaid lines comes into alinement with the edge of the casing termined, the number of the line indicating the rise in inches per foot. At the opposite side of the rafter is a pivoted blade 7 for giving the bevel or cut of jack-rafters. Located in said casing is a slide 8, formed with a slot 9, through which one of the set-screws 2 passes. This slide is extensible, so as to be used in connection with hip-rafters, which are longer than common rafters The manner of using the device will be readily understood by carpenters and others who are familiar with the art of roof construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In a framing-square, the combination with the graduated casing, the graduated blades pivoted to opposite ends of the casing provided with radial lines and adapted to be folded within the casing, the folding blade at the opposite side of the casing and pivoted to one end thereof, the laterally-adjustable slotted slide and the set-screw for holding it in its adjusted position, substantially as dey scribed.
