UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
JOHN FRANKLIN ISAIAH CONWAY, OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
LAUNDRY AND KITCHEN TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 621,033, dated March 14, 1899. Application filed September 30, 1898. Serial No. 692,263, (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANKLIN ISAIAH CONWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laundry and Kitchen Tables, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tables; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which may be used as an ordinary table, but which is particularly adapted for use as an ironing-table.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table made according to my invention; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fig. 3, a sectional end view; Fig.4, a perspective view showing the table when adapted foruse as an ironing-table.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the table as shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6, an end view thereof, part of the construction being shown in section.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate partsof my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a table which comprises an oblongrectangular frame 7 supported by legs 8, and which is provided with a top table-board 9, which is preferably provided at opposite corners with pivot-holes 10, which are designed to hold sad-iron supports 11, as shown in Fig. 4, and said supports are adapted to turn and may be of any desired form, and the object thereof is to provide means whereby a sad-iron may be supported without coming in contact with the tableboard 9.
My improved table is also provided with hinged leaves 12, which are detachably connected therewith, and for this purpose I pro vide hinges consisting of two separate parts or plates, one of which is secured to the bottom of the table-board and the other to the bottom of the leaves 12. The plates which form that part of the hinge secured to the table-board are shown at 13 in Figs. 2 and 5,
and the corresponding plates, which are secured to the leaves 12, are shown at 14 in Fig. 2.
The plates 13 are provided with projecting arms 15, connected by a pintle 16, and the plates14 are provided with hooked fingers 17, which catch over said pintles and thus form the hinge, and the leaves 12 when thus c011- nected with the table-board 9 may be raised into the same plane with said table-board and held therein by slides 18, as shown in Fig. 2, two of said slides being connected with the frame of the table, outside of each end thereof, by keepers l9, and the other two being mounted beneath the table-board by means of keepers 20, as shown in Fig. 5.- These slides 18 are each provided near their outer ends with holes 21, and in addition to serving as supports for the hinged leaves 12 of the table are also. adapted to support ironing-boards 22, as shown in Figs. 4to 6, inclusive, andfor this purpose the ironing-boards 22 are provided with pivoted pins 23, which pass through the holes 21 inthe slides 18, and said ironing-boards are provided with transverse recesses 24 at each end thereof, at the inner ends of which the pins 23 are pivoted,
and said pins when not in use toconnect the ironing-boards 22 with the slides 18 are adapted to rest in said recesses 24.. The ends of the frame of the table are also provided with horizontal oblong openings 25, and the ironing-boards when not in use are adapted to pass through said openings and to be supported in the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, and the leaves 12 of the table may also be placed in the frame in the same manner when the ironing-boards 22 are in use.
The slides 18 are preferably provided at their inner ends with pins 26, which prevent their withdrawal from the keepers 19 and 20 when being pulled out to serve as supports for the ironing-boards 22, and all that is necessary to change the table from the form shown in Fig. 1, in which it is adapted for general use, to that shown-in Fig. 4., in which it is designed for use as an ironing-table, is to detach the leaves 12, draw out the slides 18, and place the ironing-boards 22 thereon, and this operation may be reversed and the table changed into the form shown in Fig. 1 whenever desired.
The table or the frame thereof is also provided in one side with a drawer 27, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts thereof herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A table constructed as herein described and comprising a frame, legs by which said frame is supported, a table-board-mounted on said frame, keepers secured to the bottom of said table-board transversely thereof, slides mounted in said keepers and adapted to be drawn out, and. ironing boards which are adapted to be connected with said slides when the latter are drawn out, said ironing-boards being provided adjacent to each end with recesses, and pins pivot-ed therein which are adapted to pass through said slides, and said table-board being also provided at each side with a detachable hinged leaf, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 20th day of September, 1898.
JOHN FRANKLIN ISAIAH CONWAY.
