SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 628,998, dated July 18, 1899. I p
' Applicationfiled May 14,1896. Serial No. 591,559. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARLAND B. ST. JOHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo,in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Potato-Masher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in potato-mashers, and more particularly to that class of potato-mashers having wire heads for crushing through the potatoes.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a potato-masher which is cheap and easy to construct; second, to provide a wire potato-masher which is durable, and, third, to provide a wire potato-masher which is quickly and easily cleaned or cleared of any accumu-" lations upon it, and other objects appearing definitely in the detailed description. I accomplish these obj ecis of my invention by the device described in the followingspecification and illustrated in the single View on the accompanying sheet of drawing.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawing, A represents a handle of wood or other suitable material, which carries the remaining part of the implement, which is made up of a single piece of coarse wire or small rod which is formed with a shank B, which is inserted into the handle A and formed into a flat coil for the head at the bottom. The outer end of the coil is open and free. The coils of the head all being entirely separate from each other form open spaces to allow the head to be crushed down through potatoes or other Vegetables and also to permit the same to be perfectly cleaned by passing a suitable cloth down the shank and out through the coils successively. This structure also permits of 0 a ready clearing by giving the same a jar,
, which causes thelong rod in the coil to vibrate and shake itself clear of an upon it.
y accumulations I am aware that potato-mashers and similar implements have heretofore been constructed with Wire heads, and am also aware that they have been constructedwith conicalshaped heads of coiled spring-wire. These are different from. my device and are objectionable in that much force is expended in operating the springs which is entirely unnecessary. They are also made of several pieces of wire or wires looped across each other, which make them. very objectionable, owing to the fact that they cannot be quickly and perfectly cleaned after they have been used. a.
I will say that my improved potato-masher is capableof some variation Without departing from my invention. The coils forming the head need not necessarily be circular, but may take any other approved and convenient shape. The space between the coils of the head should be equal to the width or diameter of the rod, as shown, to secure the best results. When so constructed, a singlestroke through potatoes or other vegetables thoroughly mashes them, and that, too, with a minimum of labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A potato-masher consisting of a handle, a single shank extending therefrom, a head consisting of a spiral flat coil wound around 75 the same having a free outer end, the said shank and head being formed of a single rigid rod as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand andseal in the presence of two witnesses. 8o
