INSTRUMENT FOR DRAWING SPIKES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,283, dated April 10, 1849.

To all 'whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK BRYANT, of Chesterfield, in the county ofV Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement, being an Instrument for drawing Spikes, Nails, &c., which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.

Figure l, is a side elevation of the instrument applied to a spike, and in the act of drawing the saine. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of ditto, with the spike represented as almost drawn. Fig. 3, is a top view of the curved casting, detached from the metallic bar.

Similar letters in the figures refer to corresponding parts.

The nature of this invention and improvement consists in curving the end of a metallic bar or rod, provided with a suitable handle at its opposite extremity, downward and outward, and tapering the same so as to bring it to an edge, and attaching to near the edge of the same, by means of a pin or bolt upon which it moves, a curved metallic casting, bent and brought to an edge at one extremity, so as to resemble a bill hook in its side elevation, and bent at the other end at right angles, or nearly so, with its lower surface, in such a manner, that when the instrument is brought in proper relation to the nail to be drawn, by bringing the edge of the end of the bar, and the bill hook edge of the casting on either side of the same, and resting the straight end of the casting on the surface into which the spike or nail is driven, and depressing the handle of the bar, the spike or nail will be embraced between said edges, and drawn with the greatest facility.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A is the metallic bar provided with a handle a, at one end, bent or curved downward and brought to an edge at the opposite end, somewhat after the form of a cyma-reversa, where it is enlarged so as to form shoulders Z) and render it stronger at that part.

B is a casting curved or bent around at one end and brought to an edge, so as to resemble in its side view a bill-hook, as at o, and bent at the opposite end at right angles as at d. This casting is perforated with an oblong slot e, through which the end of the metallic bar is inserted, and is also perforated on its sides, midway between its ends with a round aperture, for the reception of the pin or bolt f, which passes through the same, and through a similar opening in the metallic bar, in such a manner that when the instrument is applied to the purpose designed, the bar will form a lever of the rst order, having the pin or bolt as its fulcrum.

The operation is as follows: When it is desired to draw a spike or nail with this instrument, the bill hook shaped edge '0, of the casting B and the edge or end of the metallic bar A, will be brought on each side of, and made to grasp, said spike or nail as near the surface into which it is driven, as possible; and the right angled end cl, of the casting will be placed on a solid part of the same, when the operator will depress the handle a: on the opposite end of the bar, and cause the spike or nail to be drawn a distance' proportionate to its descent,(the grip or embrace taken on the spike or nail being increased with the power appliecl)-and after forcing said handle down suiiiciently far, he will again raise it-take a fresh hold of the spike or nail near the surface-and again depress, with a like result to its previous descent, and so on, in this manner, until the rspike or nail is drawn; the peculiar shape of the lower end of the bar A allowing the spike or nail sufficient space to pass through the slot e as it is drawn from the material into which it is driven.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

Forming the lower end of the metallic bar A, (provided with a handle a at its opposite end) somewhat after the form of a cyma-reversa, and brought to an edge, and attaching to the same by means of a pin or bolt f, a curved slotted casting B, made of a bill hook form at one end c, and also brought to an edge at that end, and bent at right angles at the other, d, in such a manner that by placing the right angled end of said casting on a solid basis, and grasping the spike or nail between the edges of the casting B, and bar A, and depressing the handle, the spike or nail will be drawn from the material into which it is driven with the greatest facility, as herein set forth or in any other mode substantially the same.
