CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,194, dated J' une 20, 1899. Application filed September 9, 1898. Serial No. 690,548. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: ing through the link-pocket, so as to engage Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. KIGHT, a the link. e citizen of the United States, residing at the D indicates a supporting-block for the pin,
city of Poplar Bluff, county of Butler, State `which is introduced through a lateral open- 55 5 of Missouri, have invented a certain 'new and ing in the draw-head and whose function is useful Improvementin Car-Oouplers,of which to support the pin in au elevated position the followingisafull, clear, and exact descripwhen the pin is raised to permit the link to tion, such aswill enable others skilled in the be withdrawn, and when the link is inserted art to which it appertains to make and use the in the draw-head it will contact with said sup- 6o Io same, reference being had to the accompanyporting-block, forcing the same laterally to ing drawings, forming part of this specifican permit the pin to drop and engage the link. tion, in whichrThis supporting-block is formed with an in- Figure l is a top plan view of my improved clined face d on its forward end, which tercar-coupler. By forming This invention relates to a new and useful two or more inclined faces or cams, on which improvementin car-couplers ofthat class conithe supporting-block rides, l am enabled to inonlyknown as link-and-pincouplers, the effect a movement which obviates any tendobject being to provide a supportingblock for ency of the block binding should it be struck 75 z5 the pin whereby when the pin is raised it is a hard blow by the link, which would tend to supported in said elevated position and when cause it to tilt or cant to one side. The two the link is introduced, so that its inserted end or more cam-faces under such conditions will passes the path of said pin, said link will enenable the block to settle itself to a horizongage the supporting-block and permit the pin tal position and prevent its displacement. 8o 3o to fall and engage the link. The upper face of the block is provided With this object in View the invention conwith a notch dm', in which operates the end sists in the novel construction and arrange of the bolt E, the function `of said bolt being ment of this supporting-block, whereby the .to limit the inward and outward movement pin is supported in an elevated position when of said supporting-block when in operation 85 3 5 raised to permit the link to be withdrawn, and when the pin is raised. The supporting-block when the link is inserted said supportingwill move inwardly on the cam-faces a, its block will be forced laterally to permit the nose d extending under the pin to support pin to drop to engage the link. The position the same. As shown in Fig. 4, when the link of the supporting-block when the link is in F is inserted it first contacts with cam-faces 9o 4o engagement with the pin is such that the sup d and forces said block to ride upwardly .and porting-block is held a considerable distance outwardly on said cam-faces a until the pin to one side, so that it rests against the pin and is released and falls by gravity to engage the is not affected by the vibrations of the link. link. l/Vhen the link is in the position shown In the drawings, Aindicates the draw-head in Fig. the nose d contacts with the pin, 95 45 of an ordinary link-and-pin coupler, which andthe supporting-blockis thereby sustained draw-head, as is usual in constructions of this in its elevated position, the object of this bekind, is provided with a bell-shaped month ing to keep the supporting-block away from or opening to guide the link into its pocket B. the link when the cars are coupled, so that C indicates a vertically-movable pin which the vibrations of the link will not wear said roo 5o is arranged in a suitable opening in the drawsupporting-block so as'to at'fect its proper ophead, said pin when in a lowered position passeration.
the several parts of my coupler can be made A I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of and substituted for those herein shown and described Without in the least departingr from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupler of thelink-and-pin type, the combination with the draw-head formed with a lateral opening and provided with a plurality of parallel cam-faces in said opening, which are of uniform inclination and height. of a supporting-block for the pin, provided with a plurality of corresponding cam-4 faces, and means for limiting the outward movement of the supporting-block, substantially as described.
2. In acar-couplerof thelink-andpin type, the combination with the draw-head formed with a lateral opening provided with a plurality of cam-faces d and shoulders a of uniform inclination and height, of a supportingblock provided with a plurality of cam-faces d and shoulders c of uniform inclination and depth cooperating` with the cam-faces and shoulders of the draw-head, and a bolt or projection E, operating in a notch in the upper face of the supporting-block, substantially as described.
3. In a car-coupler of the link-and-pin type, the combination with the draw-head formed With a lateral opening provided With a plurality of cam-faces and shoulders, of a supporting-block D formed with an inclined upper face and a nose which is adapted to sustain the pin of the coupler in an elevated position when the supporting-block is at the in- Ward limit of its movement, said nose being of such length that, when the link of the coupler is introduced to force the supportingblock away from the pin, andthe pin engages the link, said nose Will contact with the pin and hold the supporting-block in an. elevated position, out of contact with the link, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 5th day of September, 1898.
