UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
' IVILLIAM J. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DETACHABLE TlE-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,939, dat d J iie 13, 1899.
Application filed January 19 1899. Serial No. 702 673 (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. SMITH, of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Tie-Frame, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved detachable tie-frame more especially designed for -use on shirt-collars to permit of conveniently forming the bow of the necktie and to hold the bow in prop er position without danger of its becoming disarranged or creeping up or down or moving sidewise on the collar.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a shirtcollar and necktie with the improvement applied thereon. Fig.2 is an inside view of the collar, the necktie, and the improvement applied thereon. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. i is a perspective View of the improvement.
The improved detachable tie-frame is provided with a front A, slightly curved to conform to the shape of the collar on a shirt, and from the sides of the said front A extend upwardly the prongs B at the back of the front, the base or bent portions B of the prongs being somewhat above the lower middle portion A of the front A. The latter is provided at its middle with a large opening A to form a space for a portion of the neckband and collar-button E to prevent the bow from becoming bulky.
In using the tie-frame one end of the neckband C after the first knot is tied is passed to the rear or back. of the front A between the prongs B, and then the latter are inserted on the inside of the collar D between the col lar and the neckband of the shirt. A bow is now completed in front of the frame in the usual manner, so that the entire frame is completely covered; but as one end of" the band passes around the front A it is evident that the bow is really tied on the frame, and consequently is not liable to creep up or down on the collar, as the prongs l3 prevent upward movement of the tie-frame and the lower portion A of said frame prevents downward movement, as the said lower portion, with its necktie-covering, rests on the bosom of the shirt. Sidewise movement of the frame is also prevented by the head of the collar-button and the portion of the band. extending into the opening A The device is very simple and durable in construction and can be very cheaply manufactured and readily arranged in place while applying the necktie on the collar to prevent the necktie from shifting and also to prevent disarrangement of the bow.
The front A extends equal distances above and below the neckband of the shirt when the device is applied, so that the necktieband extends and is always held in the same place on the collar'attached to the band.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- .As a new article of manufacture, a tie-frame separate from the tie with which it is used and by which the forming of the bow of the tie is facilitated, consisting of a plate havinga large opening in its middle for the reception of a portion of the tie and the collar-button and provided with prongs projecting upwardly at the rear from the sides, the base or bent portions of the prongs being above the lower edge of the middle portion of the plate, as set forth.
WILLIAM J. SMITH.
