.Be it known that I, CARL II. MUEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVaistband-Fasteners and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;

The object of thisinvention is to provide a fastening for waistbands which may be con veniently and quickly attached to the extremities thereof and be securely locked when in place without sewing or other means of attachment and which when in engagement will securely hold the opposing extremities of such waistband.

I accompany this specification with drawings of my invention, in which similar parts are indicated by like letters of reference, and by their aid I will describe it.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of a blank form of which one part of the fastening is formed before being bent. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said part as when bent to form a hook and to apply it to the waistband. Fig. 3 shows the hook portion of the fastening as it appears when secured to the waistband. Fig. 4 shows another form for the eye.

My device is usually made of sheet metal in ,two parts, preferably of brass as least liable to corrode, of sutficient thickness to keep its shape when in use and sufficiently pliable to be easily bent with ordinary pliers. I take a sheet of metal from which I cut a blank form for a hook, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, in which A and A designate the body and A that part of which the hook is formed, which usually has an opening a. B and (3* indicate two pointed prongs which extend from opposite edges of said body, one of said prongs being provided with a rectangular opening I) and the opposite prong being formed with lugs or catches c projecting from opposite edges, as shown. The other part of the fastening, forming an eye for connection with the hook, is a strip of sheet metal pointed at the extremities, as seen in Fig. 4, and having two slots g and g cut therein. In

said figure the said strip G is shown bent to form the prongs G and G and having the slots 9 and g cut in opposite edges of the strip, said slots being open at their outer ends, so that when the strip is adjusted and fastened in place the said prongs will interlock and lap on one another.

To form a hook and apply it to the waistband, the part A of the blank form shown in Fig. 1 is bent to be parallel with the body of the hook, and the prongs B and O are bent to stand at right angles to the body as shown in Fig. 2. The said prongs are then passed through slits out in the waistband. The lugs c are then bent to stand at right angles to the prong O. The latter is then passed through the opening I) in the prong B. The lugs c are then bent outward, and both prongs are then bent down and flattened by a smart blow, bringing them to the position shown in Fig. 3 and securing the hook to the waistband so that it cannot be removed except by reversing the process above stated. The eye with which the hook is to connect is to be attached to the extremity of the waistband opposite the hook.

In applying the strip G which forms the eye, the said strip being bent to form the prongs G and G the said prongs are inserted through slits made in the waistband and bent so as to interlock in the slots 9 and g and lap on each other and are then flattened.

I claim-- 1. In a waistband-fastenin g of sheet metal, made in two parts, the combination of said parts, one of which is bent to form a hook at one end and has two pointed prongs which are made integral with the body of the hook and extend laterally from opposite edges of said body, one of said prongs having a rectangular aperture Z), the opposite prong being provided with lugs c, and both of said prongs being adapted to be bent at right angles to said body, so as to be passed through slits in the waistband, substantially as herein set forth and described.

2. In a waistband-fastening of sheet metal, made in two parts, one of which forms a hook, and the other part forms an eye, the combination of said parts, the said part forming an eye consisting of a strip which is pointed I at its extremities and is provided near its ends with slots g and 9 open at their outward ends and cut in opposite edges of said strip,

so that the ends of said strip may interlock and lap on one another, substantial-1y as set forth and shown.
