CHARLES -\V. MCCARTER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 626,334, dated June 6, 1899.
Application filed October 6, 1898.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES \V. MCCARTER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musicians Wire Cutters, Loopers, and Twisters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new article of manufacture, having for its object the production of cords'for stringed instruments; and it consists in a composite hand-tool ad apted to effect the cutting of the cord or wire and the looping and twisting of the end thereof to engage the instrument upon which it is strung.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a device embodying my complete invention. Fig. 2 is an end view, partly in section, on the linear cc of Fig. l and showing the wire in position for cutting. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1, showing the device as held for forming the twisted loop and the looped wire and movable cutter in position for the twisting operation.
The body of the device comprises a cuttingpost 0, a clamping-arm A, and a handle D, formed in a single piece, the portions 0 and A being being preferably arranged at right angles and the handle or finger-hold D form: ing a wing or projection on the post 0, extending in an opposite direction from the arm A, but in line with the latter, as shown. The outer wall a of the clamping'arm A is extended under the post C, so as to form a suitable base upon which the device maybe rested or supported in the cutting operation, as hereinafter described.
The post G is suitably bored or recessed longitudinally at c to receive a cutter-bar E, which is guided therein, and is also provided with lateral openings 0 and 0 through the opposite walls near the bottom of the bore 0, thus forminga passage-way for the wire intersecting said bore. As shownin Fig. 2, the end of the cutter-bar is recessed, as indicated at e, to form a circular cutting edge, and the bottom of the bore 0 is preferably formed with a corresponding circular depression 6 below the central surface e which latter is slightly below the bottom of the opening 0 Serial No. 692,794. (No model.)
in the wall of the post, the opening 0 in the opposite wall, however, being extended below the opening 0 so that a wire Fpassed through said openings will rest in said opening c the lower inner edge of which forms a shearing edge as the cutter-bar E is forced down upon it, while the portion of wire extending across the bore cand through the extended opening cis free to be depressed with the cutter-bar.' The latter is provided with a suitable head 6 upon which a sufficient pressure or blow may be delivered to sever the inserted wire at 0 The clamping-arm A is drilled longitudinally and screw-threaded to receive a clamping-screw B and is also provided with a lateral opening a, forming an intersecting wire passage-way at the bottom of the bore for the clamping-screw.
The end of the wire upon which the loop is to be formed is doubled upon itself after the wire has been passed through the opening a and securely held by means of the clampingscrew, as indicated in Fig. 3, the tool be in g conveniently held as there indicated. The twisting required to form a permanent loop is then readily effected, the cutter-bar E, which is removable from the post C for this purpose, being adapted to serve as a twistinglever, as shown.
By combining in a single article of manufacture the several features described I have produced a novel and useful tool adapted in itself to produce from reeled or spooled wire musical strings of any desired sizes suitably looped for attachment to the instrument, thus enabling the musician to readily effect what has heretofore been most difficult and unsatisfactory.
What I claim is- A cutting device for wire, comprisingahollow post or standard having intersectingwireopenings 0 c and a cutter-seat 6 6 and a cutter-bar guided therein and having its end recessed to form a circular cutting edge, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me, at Reading, Pennsylvania, this 30th day of September, 1898.
CHARLES \V. MOCARTER.
