INVENTOR O/NJVQ Y -Qofn WATTORNEYNW r V,r .lvllilllllllllarl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GRAHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
-CHILDS BARRIER.I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,926, dated May 3, 1899. Application filed February 17, 1899. Serial No. 705,815. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohildrens Barriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety-barriers for children, applicable to open doorways and windows; and the objects of my improvements are, tirst, to provide a safe barrier to the exit of children through open doorways; second, to provide a barrier to children from falling out of open windows. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- .Figure l is a view of the turnbuckle and rods. Fig. 2 shows sideview of post; Fig. 3, front view of post; Fig. 4, full view of the barrier complete.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I make the barrier preferably of wood, of any size, style, or shape desired. The top bar C and lower bar K are'each provided with fixed pins G at each end. The posts R and P have openings near the top and bottom adapted for sockets T for the pins G. The rods S and B, preferably made of metal, have right and left screw-threads at one end and at the other ends are provided with a iXed collar and an elongated iiat metal plate E, which has an opening in the center through which the rod passes and is movable in said opening. Outside this metal plate E is another collar, secured to the rod. The turnbuckle A connects and operates the rods B and S. These rods B and S pass through openings in the railings and center pieces and are movable in said openings. The turnbuckle Aunites them in the center of the barrier by being screwed onto the right and left threads on the rods B and S.
In the center of the posts R and P are openings to admit the outside collar on the rods B and S. The flat metal plate E is then fastened by screws or nails `to the posts R and P and secures this collar in said openings in the posts R and P.
It will be seen that by the operation of the turnbuckle A the posts R and P are drawn close up to the bars C and K. The barrier is then placed in the open doorway or window, and then by reversing the movement of the turnbuckle A the posts R and P are gradually moved outward to the casing of the door or window and are pressed iirmly and securely against the said casings. This childs safety-barrier is adapted for use in open doorways and windows and is quickly putin place or removed by operating the turnbuckle A.
I am aware that gates for open doorways have been made; but I am not aware nor do I believe that movable barriers for open doorways and windows having rods with right and left threads connected and operated by a turnbuckle have ever been made previous to my invention thereof.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a movable safety-barrier the combination with the side posts P and R, of the bars C and K provided with pins engaging openings in said side posts, the rods B and S connected at their outer ends to the side posts and provided' at their inner ends with right and left hand screw-threads, and a turnbuckle for operating said rods and connected parts as set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 1st day ot' February, A. D. 1899.
JOSEPH GRAHAM.
