J. T. CARPENTER, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA;
Letters Patent No. 62,471, dat d PM, as, 1861.
IMPROVED BROOM-HEAR,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: q
Be it knownthat I, J. T. CARPENTER, of Harrisburg, in tho countyof Dauphin, and in the State.- of Penn. sylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Broom-.Heads, and do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and'to the letters of reference marked thereon.
' In the annexed drawings making part of this specification, A represents a metallic box or case, which is intended to hold the buts of the straws for making the broom. .This box or case consists of a strap of sheet metal made as widens the broom to be thick, with its ends turnedover' or around so.asto form eyes, as seen. This strap is provided on each side, a portion of its length, with two metallic plates, between which the buts of the straws are held, and t t-its centre with a hole or opening, through which the broom-handle passes. B B represent two metallic jaws, which are provided ate'ach end withpins, (Z (1, turned or set at right angles to the jaw; they arc also provided with teeth on'on'e edge, which set in toward the straws of the broom, and also with staples at their centres, which project inwards. One of the jaws is provided with a single staple, a, and the other is provided with two staples, a, The single staple is intended to fit between the other two. In using this broom-head the buts of the straws are first inserted in the box or case.. After as many are placed in as will make the broom 'of proper thickness, the two jaws are placed upon each side of the broom, so that their pins will enter the eyes of the strap, and the single staple will enter between the other two. The end of the broom-handle which enters the head being made tapering, is driven in the opening in the strap made to receive it, and its pointed end enters the opening between the staples. As the handle is driven intothe staples, they draw the jaws together tightly upon the broom-straws, and the teeth upon said jaws, entering between the straws,serv e to keep them in proper place. A sufiicient quantity of straw is placed in each case or box to make thc broom perfectly compact and tight when the handle is driven in and the jaws are brought together as nearly as they can be by the meeting of the pins of the two jaws within the eyes of the strap. After the handle has been driven into its proper place, so as to properly tighten the straws, it is secured by means of a screw, which passes through one of the plates ofthe case or head into the handle. c
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The jaws B B constructed as described, with their loops a a, when used in combination with the case or head A,'-ahd tapering handle D, the whole constructed and used as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of February, 1867.

NELSON Haas.-
