Description

A. BEN NET-E1 Lighting Device.
Patented March 27, 1849- 1 N. PETERS Phowumo n hu, Wuhinglon. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFroE.
ALEXANDER BENNETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SELF-LIGHTING LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,244, dated March 27, 1849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER BENNETT, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Igniting Matches and Lighting Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a section (longitudinal). 3 is a transverse section.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved machine for igniting matches and lighting lamps, by means of a set alarm or to be actuated by the hand through a variety of means as described herein.
Upon or within a box, case or frame is placed a main shaft (a) near the front end of which are placed two disks or plates (6) one being stationary and the other loose upon the shaft and having a tightening nut at its back; upon one side a recess (m) is provided for the insertion of a match of a given length having the lighting end outward so that it may come in contact with the igniting table and material. The main shaft has also upon it a lever (c) and besides this is connected by a belt toa spring (d). This lever (a) is to be brought under a catch ((2) formed like a T and set so as to work on a fulcrum (7c) and having a hook to hold the lever (c) at the time the machine is set for alarm. An additional spring is placed so as to keep the catch (e) in place when in operation. I provide in any suitable way, a table or other contrivance upon which a rough surface for igniting the match is to be placed so that by the operation of the apparatus, the match may be lighted; this table may be known as (f) in the drawing.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows; viz, a lamp as (5/) should be placed as seen in the drawings, in front or by the side of the disks; the shaft should beturned and the lever (c) placed under the hook or catch (6) where it remains. A match is placed in the disk so as to project just sufiicient to strike the igniting table by the extreme end of the match (it) the lamp should be filled with alcohol or other material that will readily ignite and placed sulficiently near to reach the flame when the match is ignited. The especial design being to have a lamp that by an alarm or any convenient apparatus may be immediately lighted. This may be used in a variety of cases, as for an alarm, etc,-which may be by means of a time-piece, as an alarm clock, a common clock, or other contrivance that will apply a weight or otherwise release the catch from the shaft when on such relief the spring acts upon the belt to turn over the shaft and as the shaft turns carries the disks, bringing the match in contact with the igniting table and to the lamp.
If no particular time is required for an alarm. a cord or other convenience may be brought to the proper place for reaching; and by the pulling or otherwise relieving the shaft a like result is produced as in case of the clock.
A piece of said paper is attached to the table (f) by any convenient method so that it can be removed or changed when worn out.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is The combination of a shaft actuated by springs which may be relieved from confinement and turn the shaft with the disks and match, so as to bring it in contact with the igniting table and present the blaze of the ignited match to the lamp and light the same in manner herein described by means of an alarm of any kind.
ALEXANDER BENNETT.
