MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters4 Patent No. 624,354, dated May 2, 1899.
Application led December 13,1898. Serial No. 699,158. (No model.)
The invention relates to match-safes, and
more particularly to that class known as single-delivery safes.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively7 inexpensive of production and one in which it will be absolutely impossible to get more than one match at a time, thus effecting a material saving in their consumption.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will ybe hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved match-safe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view showing the match-plunger elevated,a match upon the delivery-board, and a match which has fallen back of the plunger into the pocket in the back of the safe. l
Inthe drawings, 1 denotes the match-safe, consisting of the back piece 2, the front piece 3, the side pieces 4, the bottom 5, the rearwardly-inclined partition 6, and the cover 7.
S denotes the plunger, which has a Vertically-sliding movement in the safe. This plunger is provided with arms or projections 9, the extremities of which are notched, as shown at 10, to receive one match at a time andelevate it above the hinged stripper delivery-board 11, having stripper-fingers 12', which when the plunger is projected upwardly will yield and allow the plunger to pass with its match and will ,then immediately fall under the match, so that when the plunger descends the match will be stripped from its arms by the stripper-fingers and will roll down the inclined board until it strikes the upper end of the front piece of the safe, whichy projects slightly above the board and is provided with a recess 12 to facilitate its removal.
In projecting the pl n ger through the matchcompartments two o1' more matches are oftentimes caught by the arms of the plunger, and if provision were not made to dispose of them they would be discharged upon the deliveryboard. To obviate this, I form a pocket 13 in the back piece, so that should more than one match be elevated it or they would drop into the pocket when they came opposite it, and after the remaining' match carried upwardly by the plunger had been discharged upon the delivery-board. and the plunger fallen to its normal position the match or matches in the pocket would drop upon the bottom of the match-compartment and be in position to be elevated upon the next upstroke of the plunger.
Any suitable means may be employed for operating the plunger; but those shown are preferred by me, and consist of a block 14, hinged to a cross-rod 15, connected to the lower end of the plunger by a iiexible strap 16.`
17 denotes a pull-bar or handle, the inner end of which is loosely connected with the forward end of the block and the outer end the front piece of the safe.
In operation where it is desired to remove a match from the safe the forward end of the handle is pulled outwardly, thus elevating the rear end of the block and projecting the plunger upwardly. In its upward movement the arms engage the match and elevate it above the delivery-board, where it is discharged. Should there be more than one match elevated, those in excess of one will fall back into the pocket in the back of the safe, and when the plunger drops to its normal position the matches in the pocket will fall back into the compartment, as above explained.
It will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be securedby Letters Patent, is-
of which projects through an opening 18 in 1. In a match-safe of the character de scribed, the combination with a match-compartment having at its upper end a hinged top serving as a delivery-board and provided with stripper-fingers, of a plunger` adapted to move vertically through the com partment andY elevate a match therefrom and deliver it upon the said board, substantially as and for -t-he l purpose set forth. i
2. In a match-safe of the character described, the Combination with a matoh-com partment form ed with a pocket in its rear side and having at its upper end a hinged top serving as a delivery-board and provided with stripper fingers, and a plunger adapted to forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
