To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT KRAUTH, of Hamilton, Butler county,0hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in autographic registers, which improvements will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a register embodying my improvements, the parts being shown in normal working position; Fig. 2, a side View of the same on a smaller scale, the top section being shown partially open, the margin-frame partially open, the coverlatch tilted, and the tearing-blade somewhat lifted; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section of the register in the plane of line b of Figs.
- 4 and 5 5 Fig. 4, a'plan of the register with the margin-frame open andthe cover-latch turned to vertical position, and Fig. 5 a vertical transverse section in the plane of line a, of Figs. 1, 3, and 4 when that plane is viewed from the right.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the floor of the register; 2, side walls rising therefrom and having shallow frontportions, these side walls and the floor forming the base portion of the casing; 3, the side walls of the top section intermembering with the side walls 2 and completing the casing sides; 4, a pivot disposed at the forward lower portions of walls 2 and 3 and serving to pivotally unite the top section to the base of the casing; 5, the tablet horizontallydisposed at the top of the casing and rigidly united to walls 3, this tablet extend ingfrom the extreme forward end of the casingbackward to within some distance of the rear of the casing; 6, a notch formed centrally in the forward end of tablet 5; 7, a cross-bar rigidly supported by walls 3 over the forward end of tablet 5 a slight distance. rearwardly from the forward end of the tablet, notch 6 extending under this cross-bar, the cross-bar standing a slight distance above the tablet, so as to form a passage for the papers forwardly from the tablet 8, a margin-frame resting on the upper edges of walls 3 a slight distance above the tablet, this margin-frame having a large rectangular opening over the tablet through which the writin g may be done on paper lying on the tablet, the marginframe beinghinged at one side of the casing, the hinged axis being located some distance outward sidewise from the casing, as seen in Fig. 5; 9, a trough formed upon one of side walls 3 at the top thereof and extending along the casing and covered by the side projection of margin-frame 8, this trough being adapted to contain a long'roll of carbon-paper; 10, a cover-latch forming practically a rearward prolongation of margin-frame 8, t-his coverlatch being pivoted to walls 2 and having its forward edge engaging down in a rabbet formed across the rear end of the marginframe; 11, the pivot-shaft of cover-latch 10; 12, a pin projecting outwardly from pivotshaft 11 under the rear edge of cover-latch 10, so that the turning up of the cover-latch forces the turning of the pivot-shaft; 13, a spring secured to pivot-shaft 11 and to one of side walls 2 and serving to resist the turning of the pivot-shaft and the opening of the coverlatch and to hold the cover-latch tightly down in therabbet of the margin-frame; 14, a side flange on the free edge of margin-frame 8, this flange capping closely down against the outer surface of the appropriate one of side walls 3, this flange being formed of thin and resilient metal, so as to yieldingly press towardthe side wall, the lower edge of this flange being sharpened to form a tearing-blade for carbon-paper;
- 15, spindles for the rolls of paper, these spindles being removably inserted across the casing and supported by the side walls thereof; 16, smooth bosses formed upon the inner surface of one of the side walls around the spindles 15 to serve as seats against which the rolls of paper may bear; 17, a hub surrounding each spindle 15 and sliding in suitable bearings in that sidewall of the casing opposite the wall having bosses 16 18, a pin in the bearing of each of hubs 17 and engaging longitudinal slots in the hubs, so as to permit the hubs to have endwise motion in their bearings without capacity for rotation therein; 19, flange-handles on the outer end of each of hubs 17; 20, a flange fast on the inner end of each of hubs 17, these flanges being adapted to come into contact with the ends of the rolls of-paper opposite the ends engaged by bosses 16; 21, springs on hubs 17 urging the hubs inwardly, whereby rolls of paper on spindles will be frictionally clamped endwise between flanges and bosses 16; 22, guide-rolls extending across the rear end of the top section of the casing and journaled in side walls 3 thereof at the rear end of tablet 5; 23, a tearing-blade lying across tablet 5 at its extreme forward end, and consequently crossing notch 6, the lower edge of this plate being sharpened and the blade being spring-pressed downwardly, as hereinafter explained; 24, the blade-rocker for blade 23, this rocker consisting of a pair of arms carrying the blade at their forward ends, their heels being pivoted to the side walls of the casing to the rear of the blade and below the top of the tablet, so that the blade may have a rising and retreating motion, one of the arms of this rocker being prolonged rearwardly to form a finger-lever; 25, the pivotshaft of blade-rocker 24, the same being j ournaled in the side walls of the top section of the casing and having rocker 24 pinned to it, so that the pivot-shaft turns as the rocker moves; 26, a helical spring on this pivot-shaft and having one end secured to the shaft and having the other end secured to a side wall of the casing, so that the tendency of the spring is to turn the pivot-shaft and press the tearing-blade 23 snugly down to the tablet; 27, a flat tension-finger projecting upwardly through notch 6 and pressing its upper end against the under surface of cross-bar 7, this finger leaning forward at its top; 28, the pivotshaft of tension-finger 27, the same being mounted non-rotatively in the side walls of the top section of the casing below pivot-shaft 25 of the blade-rocker, tension-finger 27 being arranged to turn upon this pivot-shaft 28; 29, a helical spring 011 pivot-shaft 28 and engaging tension-finger 27 and tending to rock the finger rearwardly, so that its upper end firmly presses cross-bar 7; 30, a cam-shaft journaled in the side walls of the top section of the casing and disposed between pivot- shafts 25 and 28; 31, a cam fast on cam-shaft 30 and engaging against the rear surface of tension-finger 27, so that as the cam turns forward the tensionfinger is pressed forward away from cross-bar 7; 32, another cam fast on cam-shaft 30 outside the casing and en gagingto the rear of a projection on flange-rocker 24, so that as the cam moves forward the blade-rocker will be moved on its pivot and tearing-blade 23 lifted from the tablet; 33, a finger-lever secured to camshaft 30 and projecting forward inside the casing near one of side walls 3; 34, a detentsegment carried by one of side walls 3 and having a detent-notch into which finger-lever 33 normally seats, so that cams 31 and 32 are normally held in idle position; 35, a helical spring on camshaft 30 and engaging between one of side walls 3 and a shoulder on the camshaft, so as to press the cam-shaft endwise and hold finger-lever 33 yieldingly in its detaining-notch in segment 34:; and 36, a stop on one of the side walls of the top section of the casing in position to limit the upward motion of tearing-blade 23.
Assume that the register is in the condition shown in Fig. 1 and that it contains no papers. Cover-latch 10 is to be turned upward, after which the top section of the casing may be turned clear forward, thus leaving the base-section entirely open and all the spindles accessible. Spindles 15 are then to be withdrawn and the rolls of paper are to be inserted in the casing. Flanges 20 are to be drawn back by handles 19 to permit the entry of the rolls, the flanges when released clamping the rolls endwise between themselves and bosses 16, the spindles being returned to position in the casing and through the rolls. This mounts the rolls of paper in the casing and provides them with elastic resisting tension by end pressure on the rolls of paper. The top section is then to be swung somewhat rearwardly and margin -frame 8 turns sidewise out of the way. The ends of the papers are then to be threaded one to the rear of each of rolls 22, after which the top section may be closed down upon the basesection. Finger-lever 33 is now to be de pressed, the effect of which is to raise tearing-blade 23 from the tablet an d to press the upper end of tension-finger 27 to a position below the top of the tablet. The paper coming from the left-hand spindle is now to be carried forward over the tablet and threaded under cross-bar 7 and tearing-blade 23, its end being pulled somewhat forward of the extreme forward edge of the tablet. A roll of two carbon-papers is now to be placed in trough 9, and one of the carbon-papers is to be carried across the tablet over the paper thereon, the end of the carbon-paper projecting somewhat beyond that edge of the top section opposite the trough. The paper coming from the middle one of spindles 15 is now to be laid over the carbon-paper on the tablet and have its end threaded under cross-bar 7 and tearing-blade 23 and past beyond the forward end of the tablet. The second carbon-paper is now to be laid over this second writing-paper. The paper from the right-hand spindles 15 is now to be laid over the second carbon-paper and have its end threaded forward like the other two papers. Margin-frame Sis now to be closed down over the tablet, its flexible flange 14 bending the projecting ends of the carbonpaper down and clamping them against the side of the casing, the surplus ends of the carbon-paper being torn off, the lower edge of flange 14 acting as a tearing-blade. The carbon-papers are thus neatly held in place. The ends of the three writing-papers projecting from the front end of the casing are now to be drawn taut and finger-lever 33 turned to normal position, thus releasing the cams and permitting blade 23 to clamp down upon the papers and permitting tension-finger 27 to clamp the papers up against crossbar 7. The surplus ends of the writing-papers are now to be torn off: all together by proper upward pull against blade 23. The machine is now loaded and ready for use. WVriting done upon the top paper presenting itself at the opening in the margin-frame becomes transferred, as usual, to the two papers lying below. Rocker 24 is now to be operated by finger-pressure, thus lifting blade 23 upwardly and rearwardly and exposing the ends of the writing-papers lying on the forward end of the tablet. The ends of the three papers may nowbegraspedbyplacingathumb above the'papers and a finger below them in notch 6, and the three papers may then be drawn forward the desired distance and blade 23 allowed to descend upon them, after which they may be torn off, leaving the fresh ends of the papers clamped by blade 23 and leaving them clamped by tension-finger 27 at the rear of their ends. When the papers are to be grasped to be drawn forward, the blade 23 is rocked upward and rearward to remove its pressure from the papers and to make room for the fingers, and when this is done while the ends of the papers are free to be grasped the papers are still gripped near the ends by tension-finger 27, pressed yieldingly upward toward cross-bar 7. The Writing-papers lying on the tablet thus remain tautly held by tension-finger 27 and by the tension devices at the rolls of paper, the result being the smooth flat disposition of the papers on the tablet regardless of whether blade 23 is up or down. Tension-finger 27 acts somewhat on the principle of a pawl and allows the papers to be readily drawn forward against suitable resisting tension; but this finger will not permit any retreat of the paper.
The cams on shaft 30 are normally idle and are brought into action only when blade 23 is to be held up and tension-finger 27 held. down to permit of theloading and threading of the machine. Spring cover-latch 10 holds the top sect-ion of the casing down to the basesection and at the same time holds the margin-frame down upon the top section.

I claim as my invention- 1. In an autographic register, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a casing, spindles therein for the support of paperrolls, a tablet over the rolls and having a notch accessible to the finger from below in its forward end, a margin-frame over the tablet, a tearing-blade disposed across over the notched end of the tablet, a rocker carrying.
said blade and pivoted to the casing to the rear of the blade and below the tablet, and a spring connected with said rocker and urging the blade toward the tablet and from the vertical plane of the pivot of the rocker, where by said blade moves rearwardly when rising.
2. In an autographic register, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a casing, spindles therein for the support of paperrolls, atablet over the rolls and havinga notch in its forward end, a margin-frame over the tablet, a tearing-blade over the forward end of the tablet, a cross-bar rigidly supported over and free from the tablet to the rear of the tearing-blade, and a spring-pressed tension-finger supported by the casing and having its end projecting through said notch to the under surface of said cross-bar.
In an autographic register, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a casing, spindles therein for the support of paperrolls, a tablet over the rolls and having a notch in its forward end, a margin-frame over the tablet, a tearing-blade over the forward end of the tablet, a cross-bar rigidly supported over and free from the tablet to the rear of the tearing-blade, and a spring-pressed tennected with said rocker and pressing said tearing-blade to the tablet, a cross-bar rigidly supported by the casing to the rear of the tearing-blade and above and free from the tablet, a spring-pressed tension-finger supported by the casing and having its end projecting through said notch to said crossbar, and a cam-shaft with cams and a fingerlever arranged to raise the tearing-blade from tablet and to depress the tension-finger from the cross-bar.
5. In an autographic register, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a casing having its side walls perforated, a spindle arranged for removable support in such perforations, a hub surrounding the spindle and projecting through the perforation in the side wall of the casing at one end of the spindle and sliding in said perforation, a handle on the outer end of said hub exterior to the casing, a flange on the inner end of said hub within the casing and of said hub exterior to the casing, a flange on the inner end of said ble to the finger from below in its forward end, a pivot-shaft journaled in fixed position in the side walls of the casing to the rear of the forward end of the tablet and below the tablet, a rocker pinned to said shaft and carrying a blade resting across the notched end of the tablet, and a spring on said pivot-shaft and having one end secured to the shaft and the other end secured to a side Wall of the casing.
7. In an autographio register, the eon1bi nation, substantially as set forth, of a casing, a tablet supported thereby, a margin-frame hinged to the oasin g and having its rear end extending rearwardly beyond the tablet, a cover-latch pivoted to the casing and forming a rearward prolongation of the marginframe and having its forward edge closing down over the rear edge of the margin-frame, and a spring urging said cover-latch downwardly upon the margin-frame.
8. In an autographie register, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a casing, a tablet supported thereby, a holder for a roll of carbon-paper disposed at one side of the top of the casing, a margin-frame over said tablet and hinged at said earbon-paper holder, and a flexible flange upon the free edge of said margin-frame and arranged to cap down over the side Wall of the casing opposite said carbon-paper holder and form a flexible clamp and tearing-blade.
