SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,190, dated September 20, 1898. Application filed November 10, 1896- Serial No. 611,619. (No model.)

T0 at whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY J. ABERNATHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at S0- corro, in the county of Socorro and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle Rests and Parasol-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in bicycle attachments, and has more particular relation to bicycle canopies and rests.

Figure 1 of the drawings'is a side elevation of a bicycle having my invention applied thereto, the canopy being raised, the dotted lines showing the device swung down to serve as a rest for the bicycle, the folded parallel position not being, shown, but evident from the construction. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail View showing the manner of hinging the supporting-rod to the clamp. Fig. 3 is a broken detail elevation, partly in section, illustrating the manner of hinging the parts. Fig. 4 illustrates in detail the means for adjusting the canopy with relation to its staff.

The said umbrella or parasol A is of any desired construction, but is preferably so mounted upon the shank D that when raised it is approximately horizontal, so as to present as little surface to the wind as possible. The upper end of said shank D is provided with a segmental plate G, forming two supporting-legs. The lower end of the shank D is provided with a fiat circular head d, having notches d cut in its periphery. The staff 0 is adjustably mounted in the hollow support B by means of a clamping-screw b, passing through a vertical slot 1), formed in said support, and engaging asuitable screwthreaded aperture 0 formed in the staff." A suitable washer or plate 6 is provided below the lower end of the clamping-screw b and is adapted to bear upon the side walls of the slot 1), so as to clamp said block firmly thereto when tightened.

The lower end of the support B is provided with a hinge member G, formed ona plate 9, secured to the lower end of the support, the hinge member being formed on its inner face with teeth 9'. A similar hinge member 9 having teeth 9 on its inner face and forming a part of what I term a hinge-link? 9 coacts with said member G, a screw-threaded stud g being secured in the member 9 and projecting through an aperture in member G, so as to receive a suitable, thumb-nut g. A spiral spring g surrounds the stud g intermediate the hinge members, said members being recessed to receive it, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thereby tending to normally force the hinge members apart. It will be apparent that upon screwing up the thumb-nut g the two hinge members will be drawn together, so as to cause their teeth to interlock, thereby rendering the parts rigid.

The lower end. of the hinge-link g comprises a toothed hinged member 9 positioned at a right angle to the member 9 at the upper end of the link, this member g coacting with a similar hinge member H, formed on the clamp E, it being understood that the hinge formed by the members 9 and H is identical in construction and operation with thehinge formed at the upper end of the hinge-link. The clamp E comprises a stationary segmental plate e and movable segmental plates e' and c hinged to said plate 6. Said plate 6 is provided'with a lip 6 having a screw-threaded aperture 6 The said plate 6 is provided'with .two spaced lips 6 A binding-screw e engages the screw-threaded aperture 6 and is adapted to fit between the lips e and to incline thereon to clamp the plates 6 and e firmly about the backbone of the bicycle just forward of the saddle.

It will be observed from the foregoing description that I have provided for adjustment of the elevation of the canopy, of its inclination relative to the staff, of the inclination of the device relative to the bicycle when serving as a bicycle-rest, and for folding and carrying the device in a convenient position when not in use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a clamp, atubular supporting-rod, a two-hinged connection between the rod and clamp, a staff longitudinally movable in the supporting-rod, and a set-screw for securing the staff in the supporting-rod, the set-screw being secured to and movable with the staff, whereby it is adapted to serve as a handle for convenience in moving the staff.

2. The combination, with a clamp provided with a hinge member on its upper surface the plane of the face of which is at a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the clamp, of a tubular supporting-rod provided with a hinge member at its lower end, a hinge-link having a hinge member at each end, adapted to cooperate with the hinge members on the clamp and rod respectively to form hinges,set-screws for locking said hinges, and means for automatically forcing the hinge members apart when the set-screws are operated to release the members, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with a clamp provided with a hinge member on its upper surface the plane of the face of which is at a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the clamp, of a tubular supporting-rod provided with ahinge member at its lower end, ahinge-link having a hinge member at each end, adapted to co operate with the hinge members on the clamp and rod respectively to form hinges,set-screws for locking said hinges, and springs intermediate the members of each hinge for forcing said members apart when the set-screws are operated to release the members, substantially as described.
