BOLSTER-STAKE FOR VEHICLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,083, dated February '7, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, TARGE G. MANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State" of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolster- Stakes for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in bolster-stakes for vehicles; and the object is to provide a stake for the trade which shall be stronger and more durable, cheaper in construction, and more convenient in use. The manner in which I accomplish these results and others of minor importance will be fully set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective of the stake attached to a bolster. Fig. 2 is a perspective of a wooden stake to be'used with my improvement for increasing the length. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank out of which the stake is formed.

Like letters denote corresponding parts in all of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a blank which is cut from one single piece of steel in substantially the form represented in Fig. 3. Through the outer end B of the blank A there are bolt-holes a, b, c, and d, through which the bolts 6, f, and g are inserted, by which the base of the stake is rigidly bolted to the outer end of the bolster. At the opposite sides of the end B are formed the two lips G, which are bent down at right angles to the plate and are bolted to the sides of the bolster F by the bolt 9, which passes horizontally through the bolster and is supplied with a nut at its opposite ends, by which the lips G are held firmly against the sides of the bolster F. At D the blank A is bent at right angles to the base and for a short distance is formed into a channel-bar with the sides 72. and the braces k in the angle formed by the base and the upright. The upper end E of the blank is further bent into a tube H, into which a wooden stake P of any convenient length may be inserted. The wooden stake P has a shoulder S, and the lower end V is made smaller to snugly fit into the upper end of the main stake for the purpose of increasing the length of the stake whenever necessary.

The brace K (shown in Fig. 1) is rigidly riveted to the tube H by the rivets j and 2', the one rivet passing through land the other m of the blank and holding the two parts of the tube together. This brace K is bent at the lower end inward upon the base and bolted with the base upon the bolster F by the bolt f.

It will be observed that there is no Weakening'of the end of the bolster by any mortise for the stake to be inserted, and there is no need of loops attached to the stake into which pose of increasing the length of the stake, as the Wooden stake in this may be inserted in the tube H. There is also no need of the usual rings into which binding-chains can be attached, as the binding-chains may be passed around the stake beneath the brace K.

It will be further observed that a bolsterstake made in this manner will be exceedingly strong and durable, cheap and easy of construction, and convenient for use to the trade.

Having now described my invention and the manner in which it is constructed and used, whatI desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. As a new article of manufacture,a bolsterstake consisting of a base and upright formed of one piece, the base provided with lips extending on both sides of the bolster and securely fastened to the bolster, the upright bent at right angles to the base and in the form of a channel-barfora short distance and terminating in a tube at the top and a brace secured at one end to the tube and at the other end to thebase and bolster as and for the purposes shown.

2. As a new article of manufacture,a bolsterstake consisting of a base and upright formed of one piece, the'base provided with lips G, the upright formed into a channel-bar for a short distance and terminating in a tube at the top, a brace and a brace K secured at its lower end to the base and bolster and at its upper end to the upright in such a manner as to hold the upper part of the upright in the form of a tube, all combined to operate substantially as described and for the purposes shown.
