VEHICLE-BODY.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,684, dated anuary 31, 1899.
Application filed August 27,1898. Serial No. 689,650. (No model.)
' To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that we, FREEMAN N. YOUNG and FRANCIS E. THOMPSON, citizens of the United States, residing -at Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Bodies, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to vehicle-bodies, the object being to provide a vehicle which in itself will form a good advertising medium on account of its shape and construction and at the same time be fitted with suitable appliances for dispensing goods, particularly beverages.
With this obj ect in view the invention consistS of a vehicle-body having the general shape of a bottle, in this particular instance of a bottle having the same shape as abottle in which a Certain beverage is always sold, said bottle being provided internally., with Certain means for cooling and handling the beverage on sale.
In the accompanying drawings, which represent our invention, Figure l is a side elevation of the entire vehicle. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the body of the vehicle. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the body of the vehicle on line x :n of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4. is a perspective view of one of the removable icetanks.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents the running-gear of the vehicle, which may be provided with any suitable arrangement of springs for supporting the body and seat.
B represents the vehicle-body, and, as shown, is in the form of a bottle standing upright, the Stopper and all other parts being faithfully copied from the Ordinary bottle. For advertising purposes we construct the walls of this bottle wholly or partially of transparent or translucent material, such that a source of light placed inside will shine through and emphasize the outlines of the bottle, making the vehicle easily seen at night, and at the same time bringing out clearly any colored pictures and other advertising matter which may be painted or engraved in or upon the transparent Walls. The walls of the bottle are preferably constructed of vertical bars b, into which panes of glass h are set. These panes of glass may be colored, if desired, or may contain pictures or Words and phrases of an advertising nature,.which will be visible by sunlight in the daytime or by an internal'artiiicial light at night. In order to vary such advertising matter at pleasure, any number of the panes of glass-for instance, Z22-may be removable, so that others containing different words, phrases, or pictures may be substituted.
As a source of artificial light we have shown an ordinary lantern c hanging inside of the vehicle-body. When this is lighted at night, the shape of the bottle is clearly brought out, and the vehicle may therefore be seen from a great distance, while at closer distances the advertising matter on the surface of the bot.
tle may be plainly observed. The vehicle is intended to transport wares, such as bottled beverages, from place to place,.stopping at intervals to sell the drink by the glass or bottle. To facilitate these Operations, the body of the vehicle is made large enough notonly to contain a supply of the beverage, but cooling means therefor, drinking-glasses and means for washing the same, and a seat and space inside for an attendant.
To effect an entrance to the bottle, the rear wall is provided with doors d, and in case there is but one attendant on the vehicle the body will also be provided with front doors e, which may be used by the attendant when driving from place to place or as an easy way to reach the vehicle-seat from the interior of the bottle.
Another feature Of our invention is a provision of removable ice-tanks. These are represented by f and are made arc-shaped, Of zinc or galvanized iron, placed around the sides, inside of the bottle, between the front and back doors. These tanks will contain a certain amount of Water and broken ice, into which the bottles of the beverage will stand to be kept cool. A small counter h is arranged to be supported by the rear doors in front of the attendants seat. Over this counter the liquids will be dispensed. The drink- IOO ing-glasses are to be Washed in a small basin i, and the glasses When not in use may be kept therein. To carry a sufficient supply of Water for this purpose, the upper part of the bottle, including the neck, is occupied by a Water-tankj, from which a pipe h', containing a valve Z, leads to the basin. Ice may be kept in this tank also, if desired, and the Water may be drawn off at pleasure. Suitable spaces or passages may be left around the Water-tank and through the neck of the bottle and stopper to permit of the circulation of air for Ventilating purposes.
Having described our invention, We claim--V l. A Vehicle-body in the forrn of a cylindrical bottle, a Water-tank conforming in shape to, and occupying the neck of the bottle, a basin below the tank to which a pipe F. N. YOUNG. F. E. THOMPSON.
