Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. BURTLESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Bed- Lounge Box Attachments; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to an attachment for bed-lounges which is adapted for the containing of bedclothing, pillows, and like articles.

It consists in the parts and the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure l is a view of the lounge, the box being opened out. Fig. 2 shows the box in place. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a modification in moving the box.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient containing attachment which is easily withdrawn from the lounge and fully exposed and which when closed forms a support for one of the angles of the lounge in place of the usual leg.

A is a lounge, which may be of the class known as bed-lounges, havingahinged folding back and seat of any of the usual or wellknown constructions, or the lounge may be an ordinaryone without these devices. This lounge has the legs B B beneath the head and the single leg B beneath the rear end at the foot. The front at the lower end of the lounge has no leg.

0 is a box coinciding in shape with the body or frame of the lounge and having a hole made through thebottom of the rear corner, andthrough this hole the leg B passes, so that the box is turnable about this leg as a pivot-post. The box may have casters D beneath it or, if'preferred, a slidable shoe or shoes D, which are rounded upon the lower surface, so as to move freely over the floor or carpet. The legs of the lounge are likewise provided with casters in the usual manner.

In order to allow the box to swivel or turn freely about its pivot-post, it is necessary to omit the front leg at the foot of the lounge, and since the lounge will not be in use when the box is being opened this omission is not detrimental to it.

hen the box is turned about its pivot and closed back into position, the angle 0 of the box stands beneath that part of the lounge from which the leg is missing and forms a contact-point upon which the lounge thus rests, while the. caster D upon this angle of the box allows the whole lounge to be moved about in the usual manner.

\Vhen closed into place, the box may either remain by gravitation or may be secured by any suitable latch or catch which causes it to engage with the frame of the lounge.

If desired, the movements of the box may be guided by means of a segmental are E, fixed either to the top of the box or the bottom of the lounge, and a clasp or yoke F, which is fixed to the adjacent part, so that it is slidable over the are when the box is turned about its pivot-post. By this construction the containing-box is easily swung forward, so as to expose the interior and allow of articles to be placed therein and can be returned to place, forming, practically, a part of the lounge when thus returned.

In order to conceal the box and make the whole device ornamental, I prefer to affix fringe or other ornamental work to the front and lower end of the box corresponding with that which surrounds the head and other part of the lounge, so that when closed together the whole lounge presents a symmetrical appearance and the box is not exposed or noticeable.

By turning the box out and placing a mattress in it it will serve as a bed for a child, while the other parts of the lounge are opened out as a bed for older persons.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a lounge or like article of furniture, of a box underlying the same and having a hole or socket interior to and near one rear corner, and a leg of the lounge adapted to engage said hole or socket whereby the box may be turned beneath the lounge or exposed exterior thereto.

2. A lounge having three legs, one of which forms a swivel-post, a box having a hole made through the bottom and fitting said leg whereby the box is turnable with relation to the post to conceal it beneath the lounge or swing it out therefrom, and contact-points between the box and the front edge of the lounge at the point where no leg exists whereby the angle of the box serves as a support for the lounge when closed into position beneath it.

4. A lounge having legs beneath the head and a single leg at one angle at the foot, a box corresponding in shape with the lounge-frame and having a swivel or joint fitting the single leg of the lounge whereby it is turnable to close beneath the lounge or to be exposed at front and end, supports upon which the box is movable corresponding with those upon the legs of the lounge and a contact-point and support between the box and the lounge at the angle which is unsupported by a leg.
