XVILLIAM H. SFENCE, OF FAIRMOUNT, INDIANA.
COMBINATION POCKET-TOOL.
SECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,241, dated January 24, 1899.
Application filed September 29,1898. Serial No. 692,224. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLTAM II. SPENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmount, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pocket- Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel form of combination-tool for the pocket; and the object is to combine in one article a pencilsharpener, paper-knife, pencil-holder, twinecutter, and manicure implement in a convenient and practical form to be carried in the vest-pocket.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool as it appears in use as a lead-pencil Sharpener. Fig. 2 is an obverse View. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the blade adjusted as a paper-cutter. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the clamp and its adjustable jaw.
1 denotes the handle, which may consist of a sheet-metal plate formed at one end with an integral conical socket 2, having a longitudinal slot 3, and immediately below the conical end 'of said socket a recess 4 is formed in the edge of the plate, as shown.
5 denotes a spring-wire clip aiiixed to one side of the plate to clamp the outer edge of the pocket to retain the tool in place and preventits accidental displacement. The upper end of this clip is turned outwardly at a right angle and formed into a spring-eye 6 to receive a lead-pencil, fountain-pen, or the like.
7 denotes a knife-blade pivoted on the rivet 8, so that its cutting edge will extend across the recess 4 and project into the slot 3 in the conical socket. The exposed side of the blade is formed with a nail-grip 9 and a nail-file 10.
12 represents a transverse lever fulcrumed on the rivet 13, and its free end is formed with a duplex clamp-jaw 14, which encompasses the free end of the knife-blade and the contiguous edge of the plate 1 to rigidly hold the blade in its proper cutting position with reference'to the pencil-socket. This clampjaw is formed with a slot 15 to receive a setscrew 16, which extends into a gage-block 17, against which the back edge of the knifeblade rests and which may be adjusted to compensate for the wear on the blade due to sharpening.
1S denotes an integral right-angular lug formed on the lower end of the plate to form a support for the knife-blade when extended in the position shown in Fig. 3.
When the knife-blade is in the position shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the edge of the blade is exposed at the recess 4, so as to form a very convenient twine-cutter.
The blank space on each side of the plate or handle may be very advantageously used for advertising purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, v
1. The plate 1 formed with the slotted conical socket 2, the blade 7 pivoted to said plate and the lever 12 fulcrumed on said plate and adapted to clamp said knife and plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The plate 1 formed with the slotted conical socket, 2, and integral lug 18, the knifeblade 7 pivoted to said plate, the lever 12 fulcrumed to said plate and the gage-block 17, adjustably secured to the free end of said lever, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The plate l, formed with the socket 2, integral lug 1S and recess 4, the knife-blade 7, pivoted to said plate and the lever 12 fulcrumed to said plate and adapted to retain an exposed portion of said blade across said recess, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM Il. SPENCE. lVitnesses:
A. R. LONG, ANNA MACY.
