. vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to beds of the classdesigned for use by persons when reclining or when sleeping; and it consists in devices of novel character which comprise adjustable and detachable parts of the foot end of a bed-frame and whereby covers spread upon the mattress of the bed are held or retained at the foot end thereof to prevent unintentional Withdrawal of the covers from the foot of the bed as well as from the feet of the occupant of the bed, said devices being also adapted to be applied as an attachment to bed-frames already constructed or in use.

My invention further consists in the parts and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front perspective view of my coverholder complete, with its brackets as preferably constructed, as itappears before being connected to the bed-frame Fig. 2, a rear perspective View of the cover-holder detached from its brackets; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the foot portion of a bed having my improvements connected thereto, the near bed-rail being broken away to expose the position of the cover-grips upon theend of the mattress; Fig. 4, a perspective View of a bracket, and Fig. 5 a perspective View showing a detached cover-grip and a securing-staple.

In the drawings corresponding parts in the several views are designated by similar let ters of reference.

In carrying out my invention I apply at the foot end of a bed a series of grips consisting of flexible arms, each having a free or swinging end adapted to engage the top edge of the foot end of the bed-mattress, the arms projecting as from the footboard of the bed toward the mattress, so that a cover extending over the foot end of the mattress is pressed against the mattress both above and below the top edge thereof. These arms are supported at points below the points of contact with the mattress by an independent frame removably supported in brackets con.- nected either to the footboard or to the side rails of the bed.

As it is highly desirable that the several parts of a bed be detachable for convenience in packing or shipping as well as for more readily cleansing the same, I preferably attach, by means of wood-screws, a suitable bracket at the inner side of each side rail of the bed,adjacent to the footend thereof, a convenient form being that shown, as O or O, in which is a back plate having right-hand or left-hand ears 6 6, each provided with a screwhole, and having a pair of side flanges h h, projecting forward, forming a slipway ito receive an end of the holder-frame or support. A spring at is pressed to form a latch Z and also to prevent rattling of the holder-frame in the bracket, and it has a finger-hold D at the upper end. The lower end is secured to the back of the bracket by means of a rivet c and has a projection d to support the holderframe. An ear f, having a screw-hole, is also provided; but it may be placed at either the upper or lower end of the bracket. The projection d may be formed integrally with the bracket, if desired, instead of with the spring D. Also the ears may be differently disposed, so that the bracket is adapted to be attached to the footboard instead of to the rails.

The holder-frame A may be suitably made of wood, pressed paper, or other suitable material in the form of a rectangular oblong slab and has ends m or adapted to slide in the brackets, so that the bottom t at each end It, notched or otherwise, is engaged by the latch Z. The bottom edge preferably has circular holes a at the back communicating with slotted recesses a at the front, although the recesses may be cut from front to back from rests upon the projection (Z, and the top end 5 the bottom edge, if desired. The top edge it is parallel with the bottom, but preferably has the notches or recesses 76 7.: at the ends.

The holder-grip B may be suitably made of spring-wire and comprises members H II, having hook-points L L to be driven into the back of the frame and are further secured by means of staples n, the said members joining coils K K, from which angular members I I extend upwardly and, bending forward, form projections J J, the extremities of which are bent downward and are joined by a horizontal member. The grips are disposed in aseries, as clearly shown; but it will be understood that I may employ a somewhat different form of swinging arm or grip, providing, however, that itshall operate as shown in Fig. 5, so that each grip B shall spring from the direction of the footboard F toward the mattress G and press a cover against the edge I). The rails E E may be made in the usual form.

As thus constructed the whole device is easily contained in the small space usually occurring between a mattress and the footboard, and so hidden and out of the way. In operation the frame is withdrawn, and after spreading the covers upon the mattress the frame is slipped into the brackets and the grips automatically bear down upon the covers and end of mattress as the frame becomes seated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A bedclothes-holder consisting of a pair of supporting-brackets adapted to be rigidly secu red to the bed-fram e, a holder-frame comprising a rectangular oblong slab having its ends engaging the brackets, and a series of holder-grips each consisting of a swinging spring-pressed arm mounted hinge-like at one end to the lower portion of the holder-frame and projecting upward and forward and having a gripping projection adapted to engage the cover, substantially as set forth.

2. In a bedclothes-holder, the combination with the supporting-brackets, of the holderframe comprising a rectangular oblong slab having ends engaging the bracket, and the series of holder-grips secured to the holderframe, each of said grips consisting of flexibly-mounted arms projecting upward and having a projecting free end to engage the cover and spring-pressed to be forced against the mattress, substantially as set forth.

In a bedclothes-holder, the combination of the bracket secured at the inner side of each bed-rail at the foot end thereof, the holder-frame removably mounted in said brackets, the series of holder-grips mounted upon said holder-frame, each of said holdergrips comprising a section of spring-wire formed so as to provide a horizontal bar at the upper end but forward of a pair of arms having at the lowerend a coil forming a spring by which the horizontal bar is forced forward against the mattress and having continuing ends whereby the grips are secured to said holder-frame, substantially as shown and described.

4. In a bedclothes-holder, the combination of the pair of brackets, each having a vertical slideway provided with a spring-latch at the top and a stop at the bottom thereof and adapted to be rigidly secured to the bedframe, the holder-frame having ends working in said slideways and adapted to be removably secured between the said rests and latches, and the holder-grips mounted upon said holder-frame and springing therefrom, substantially as shown and described.

'5. In a bedclothes-holder, the combination of the brackets C, 0, having securing-ears and each having the slidewayt' and provided with the spring D having the integrallyformed latch at the top and the stop at the bottom of said slideway, the holder-frame supported in said brackets, and the springgrips mounted at the front of said holderframe, substantially as shown and described.

6. In a bedclothes-holder, the combination of the supporting-brackets adapted to be secured to the bed-rails, the holder-frame extending across the foot of the bed and mount ed removably in the said brackets, and the holder-grips B secured to said holder-frame and comprising each spring-Wire members H H, secured to the rear of the holderframe and having the coils 7t, 75, and continuing members I, I, extending upward from the coils and provided with forwardly-projecting members J, J, and a connecting member, substantially as shown and described.
