MECHANISM FOR OSCILLATING GANG-SAWS.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,220, dated December 20, 1898.
Application filed April 11, 1898.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM lvLWILKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanisms for Oscillating Gang-Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe let= ters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanism for oscillating gang-saws; and it consists, substantially, in the devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a gangsaw sash or frame and the guides in which it operates embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation of the same with the guides left off. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view with the saws removed. Fig. 4 is a front view in elevation of a portion of a gang-saw sash or frame and a portion of the guides at one side of the sash or frame embodying a modified construction of my invention. Fig. 5 is a side view of the same with the guides removed.
In the construction of my invention, illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A A A A are the guides in which the saw-frame B operates. At the sides of the upper and lower parts of the frame B there are trunnions O 0. Upon the trunnions O are placed eccentrics D, each having an arm 61 thereon, which projects out in front of the saw-frame B, and mounted upon the eccentrics D are the slides E, operating in the guides A at the upper end of the sawframe B, and mounted upon the trunnions O are the slides E, operating in the guides A at the lower end of the saw-frame B, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Upon the front side of the upper portion of the pitman F, just below where it is coupled to the lower cross-piece b of the sash or frame B, a cross-piece G is secured, the ends g thereof being curved outward, as illustrated in Fig. 3, so that the ends thereof are out some distance from the front of the sash or frame B, and pivoted to the $erial N0- 677,161. ends 9 of the cross-piece G there are rods II, which extend up in front of the sides of the frame B and have their upper ends pivoted to the arms cl of the eccentrics D at the upper part of the saw sash or frame B, so that at each revolution of the crank I, operating the pitman F and the saw sash or frame B, the lateral swing of the pitman F operates to rotate the eccentrics D through the cross-piece G, the rods II and arms d connecting them with the pitman F, so that as the saw-frame B travels downward the upper end 1) thereof is moved forward, and as it travels upward it is moved backward, producing the necessary drag of the saws during their downward out.
In the modified construction of my invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the cross-piece G, secured to the pitman F, the vertical rods II, the trunnions O, eccentrics D, and the arms 01 thereon, connected with the upper ends of the rods H, are the same in construction and operation as hereinbefore described. In this construction, however, the trunnions C at the lower end of the saw-frame B are provided with eccentrics D, placed thereon,which have arms d thereon extending out in front of the sides of the saw-frame, and these eccentrics D extend into the slides E, which are mounted thereon, andfrom the ends of the arms d links it extend upward along the rods II and are pivoted to the sides of collars h on said rods, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5; so that in operation the entire saw-frame is moved forward on its downward traverse and back* ward on its upward traverse by the lateral swing of the pitman F.
I have thus described my invention so as to enable others to make and use the same; but I do not confine myself to the exact construction shown, as many modifications therein can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, it is manifest that I can utilize the eccentrics in the slides either both in the top and bottom slides or in the top or in the bottom slides alone. Therefore,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination in a saw-frame, of trunnions on the sides thereof, eccentrics mounted on said trunnions, arms on said eccentrics extending laterally therefrom, slides mounted on said eccentrics, and adapted to operate in the saw-frame guides, and actuating mechanism coupled to the arms of said eccentrics, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a saw-frame, of trunnions on the sides thereof, eccentrics mounted on said trunnions, arms on said eccentrics extending outward from the saw-frame, slides adapted to operate in saw frame guides mounted on said eccentrics, a cross har secured to the pitman operating the saw-frame, and rods connecting the ends of said crossbar with the arms on said eccentrics, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination in asaw-frame, of trunnions on the sides of the frame at the top and bottom thereof, eccentrics mounted on one pair of said trunnions, arms on said eccentrics extending outward toward the front or rear of the saw-frame, slides mounted on said eccentrics, and slides mounted on the other pair of said trunnions adapted to operate in the saw-guid es, a cross-bar secured to the pitman operating the saw-frame, and connections between said cross-bar and the arms on said cccentrics, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
