PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,208, dated December 20, 1898.

Application filed April 30, 1897. Serial No. 634,580. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LUCIAN STANEK, of Boston, (Roxbury,) in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to the general class of puzzles, but more particularly to the class in which it is desired to remove a ring or other object from off a link, band, or series of these; and it consists, essentially, of a series of links or bars connected by a flexible band on which is an object of arbitrary design adapted to be removed therefrom by manipulating said flexible band.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my device, showing all the parts assembled in their normal positions. Fig.- 2 is a similar View showing the first step toward the solution of the puzzle, with the end of the band passing through one of the eyes, (shown in dotted lines.) Fig. 3 is a like view showing one end of the flexible band detached from the links, with the object ready to be withdrawn therefrom The bars 1 and 2 are provided on one end with suitable eyes 3 and 4, through which the connecting-link 5 is adapted to pass, and held against displacement by means of suitable heads 6 and 7. To the other ends of these bars, through the eyes 8 and 9, are attached the loop ends 10 and 11 of the flexible band 12, on which is the ring or other suitable object 13. The object 14: on the connecting-link 5 in this case is intended to confuse the operator in his attempt to solve the problem, as he will endeavor to remove the object 14: at the same time or instead of the object 13.

The solution of the problem is accomplished as follows: The operator grasps the puzzle in his left hand, and by releasing or enlarging the loop end 10 and passing it up over one end of the connecting-link through the eye 3 of bar 1, thence over the head 6 of the .connecting-link, thence back again through the eye 3 and through the eye 8, the object can be Withdrawn from the band.

It is obvious that minor details of construction in form and shape may be resorted to without materially altering the objects or intents of this device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A puzzle, comprising a pair of bars having eyes at their ends, a connecting-link for such bars permanently attached to an object, such as an animal-image, a flexible band removably applied to another object, which may be also an animal-image, and having its ends looped through the eyes of the bars, from either of which the said band is to be freed in order to release the object, substantially as described.
