DEVICE FOR FACILITATING OPENING OF PRESERVE-JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,579, dated November 22, 1898.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLF SCHILLER, government architect, of 12 Rheinallee, Godesberg-on-the-Rhine, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Facilitating the Opening of Preserve-Jars and other Vessels Provided with Spring Gaps or Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the opening device for the caps or covers of preserve-jars and the like forming the subject of the present invention the system of levers for producing the lever action consists of two wire bows or loops, of which one serves as a support for the other bow or loop, acting as the lever proper, while between the two bows or loops is provided a pivotal connection in such a manner that the opener can be applied to the jar without increasing the difficulty of handling and packing the same, since both bows or loops lie normally one Within the other and fit closely against the outside of the neck of the bottle.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the U -shaped bows or loops connected together and removed from the jar or vessel. Fig. 2 is a half-radial section of a jar or vessel provided with a cap or cover, showing the opener in side elevation and section with one of the bows or loops supported on a bead or flange on the vessel. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the arrangement shown in Fig. 2.
The opening device consists of a combination of two wire bows or loops a and b of U- shaped form, which are bent round at right angles at their ends. The ends I) b of the shorter bow or loop I) engage in eyes 0 0, formed in the longer bow or loop a, so that a pivotal connection is made in this way between the said bows or loops at and b.
In order to apply the opening device to a jar or other vessel, certain modifications must be made both in the coverD as well as in the said jar or vessel K. For instance, a spring tongue or projection on the cover is provided with an eye F, which, as shown in Fig. 2, is formed by stamping out a small strip 4; of the sheet metal. The jar or vessel itself is provided with an external bead or annular flange R, which can easily form an ornamental or supporting edge. Normally the two bows or loops lie one within the other, Fig. 1.
When it is desired to use the opening device, the bent-round ends a a of the longer bow or loop a are introduced by the exercise of a slight pressure into the eye F in the tongue or projection on the cover. Then the lower part of the shorter bow or loop I) is placed on the ring R on the jar or vessel and pressure exerted on the free part of the longer bow or loop a. In this manner the cover is gradually raised, this taking place all the easier, since, by reason of the particular construction, the effects of the lever and its supporting lever or loop come into play simulta neously, which causes removal or lifting of the cap or cover both upward as well as outward.
In cases where the cover is arranged in-a perfectly definite position a short projection for supporting the shorter bow or loop I) can be used, corresponding in position to the eye 2; on the cover, instead of the annular bead or flange R.
Having now particularly described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a vessel provided near its mouth with an annular shoulder and on its body with a projection, and a cap for closing the mouth of said vessel adapted to be locked to its annular shoulder and provided with a lip; of a lever pivoted to said lip and a fulcrum-bar pivoted to the lever at a point intermediate of its ends and adapted to seat on the aforesaid projection on the body of the vessel, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a vessel provided near itsmouth with an annular shoulder and on its body with a projection, and a cap for closing the mouth of said vessel adapted to be locked to its annular shoulder and provided with a lip; of a lever removably pivoted to said lip, and a fulcrum-bar pivoted to the lever at a point intermediate of its ends, said bar adapted to seat 011 the projection on the body of the jar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a vessel provided near its mouth with an annular shoulder and on its body with a projection, and a cap for closing the mouth of said vessel adapted to be locked to its shoulder and provided with a lip having an eye; of a more or less resilient U- shaped lever, the ends of the legs of which are bent inwardly and have bearing in the eye on said lip, and a U -shaped fulcrum-bar pivoted to said lever at a point intermediate of its ends and adapted to seat on the aforesaid projection on the body of the vessel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
