Description

(No Model.) 8 M. A. L. THOMAS.
THREAD HOLDER AND CUTTER FOR STOOLS. N0. 603,389. Patented May 3, 1898.
"FM" M: i
III llllllllllllllulfll Jill UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.MARY A L. THOMAS, OF SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE.
- THREAD HOLDER AND CUTTER FORSPOOLS.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 603,389, dated May 3, 1898. Application filed May 15, 1897. Serial No. 637,019. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVIARY A. L. THOMAS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield,,in the county of Robertson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread Holders and Cutters for Spools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to thread holders and cutters for spools; and the object ofthe invention is to provide a device of this character which may be easily attached to spools and which will subserve the double function of cutting the thread and holding the cut end from unwinding from the spool.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spool with my improved holder and cutter attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the end of the thread from which a portion has been severed clamped to the spool and retained against unwinding, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device removed.
All said drawings, 1 denotes a spool, and 2 the clamping-band, which consists of a split ring adapted to embrace the end flange of a spool and clamp itself thereto. This band is provided with a tangential integral extension 3, formed with a thread-clampin g surface and having an inwardly-projecting cutting-lip 4.
In operation when it is desired to sever a needle length of thread the desired amount is unwound from the spool and hooked under the cutter.
Now by drawing the thread against the cutting edge it will be severed, while the 7 is simple and inexpensive and may be easily applied to and removed from the standard forms of spools, and by its employment much inconvenience will be lessened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A thread holder and cutter consisting of a divided clamping-band adapted to engage the end flange of a spool, and providedwith a tangential extension formed with a thread holding and cutting surface, substantially as "set forth.
' 2. A thread holder and cutter consisting of a divided clamping-band adapted to engage the end flange of a spool, and provided with a tangentialextension formed with a thread clamping surface, and having an inwardlyprojecting cutting-lip, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARY A. L. THOMAS.
