SPECIFICATION forming part of' Letters Patent No. 603,339, dated May 3, 1898.
Application filed October 20, 1897.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN' ISRAEL NEwBURe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Fenders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to wheel-fenders for use on motor-cars, and'will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating my improved fender in its operative position upon a portion of a carbody. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line y y of Fig. 1; and Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged det-ail sections taken inthe planes indicated by the lines w w and respectively, of Fig. l.
In the said drawings similar letters desig-v nate corresponding parts in all of the severalV views, referring towhich- A designates a car-body having an ordinary platform a, and B designates hangers, two of which are arranged adjacent to each side of the car-body, as shown. In each of these hangers B are placed two peri pherallygrooved wheels C, which are arranged one above the other and are disposed in the direction of the length of the car, as shown. The forward and rear pairs of wheels C are arranged in longitudinal alinement with the forward pairs of wheels in a plane slightly below that of the rear Vpairs for a purpose presently described, and the upper and lower wheels are designed to receive vrods D between them. The said rods D are providedv with apertures b for the detachable connection of the fender proper, (presently described,) and they are backed by springs E, so as to enable the fender proper to give rearwardly when it strikes a person on the track, and thus reduce the liability of such person being seriously injured. In the present embodiment of my invention the springs E are connected at one end to hangers c, depending from the car.- platform a, and are connected at their opposite ends to arms d, adjustably fixed on the senin No. 655,831. rodsD by set-screws e, such adjustable connection being provided so that the tension of the springs may be increased or diminished, as desired. The springs E will tend to normally hold the rods and fender proper in the position shown and will return the same to such position when they have been passed rearwardly,and in this they will be assisted by the downward inclination of the rods D.
I contemplate equipping each end of the car-body with the devices thus fardescribed and detachably connecting the fender proper to the rods D, so that said fender proper may be used upon either end of the car, accord' ing to the direction in which the same is to travel.
F designates the fender proper, which comprises a frame f, made up of two sections g h and netting or other suitable textile material i. The frame-section g comprises tubular side bars j, which are designed to receive the rods D and be detachably connected thereto by the pivoted hooks 7a, the arms Z, which are formed integral with and extend upwardly and rearwardly from the bars j and having swiveled threaded unions m at their upper ends, and the upper cross-bar n, which has depending branches p,with threaded ends for the engagement of the unions m, as shown.

provided with lateral lugs r. To these iiattened ends are pivotally connected by bolts s the rear flattened ends of the side bars t of the frame-section h, said section being supported in its operative position by the lugs r, which,however, do not interfere with it being swung back upon the section g when desired. The` side bars t of the section 7L are connected adjacent to theirforward ends by a cross-bar u, and they are provided at their forward Yends with eyes fu, which receive the journals of-a rubber-covered roller w, the purpose of which is to facilitate the picking up of a person on the track and preventinginjury to such person.
It will be seen from the' foregoing that my improved fender proper is very cheap and simple and that it maybe quickly and easily made and applied to a car.
It will also be seen that the fender as a whole will tend to pick up a person on the IOO track without inflicting any serious injury on such person.
Having thus described inyinveniion, what I claim is- The combination of a car-body, hangers connected to and depending from said body adjacent to each side thereof7 Ithe lower and upper wheels arranged in the hangers and disposed in the direction of the lengthof the car, the rods D arranged and adapted to inove between the upper and lower wheels and having the vertically-disposed apertures ZJ adjacent `to their outer ends, coiled springs connected at one end with the car-body and at their opposite ends to arins on the rods, and the detachable fenderproper having the frame comprising the section g provided with the tubular side barsj receiving the forward ends of JOHN ISRAEL NEWBURG.
