SPECIFICATION.
Be it known that we, /W. M. Hicks and FEnDnuNn Wammes, of the city and county of St. Louis, VState of Missouri, have invented a new and improved mode of constructing Leaders for Cisterna; and. we do hereby declare that the following is a. full and ex'act description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. y Figure l representing the leader when closed.
i Figure 2, vertical section of same. Figure 3,' the leader when opened. Figure 4, vertical section of same.
Figure 5, section of the spout B.
The nature of our invention consists in the insertion into the common leader pipe, `as used almost at'every building, of a square box, A, provided with an' adjustable spout, B, which turns around a hinge, C, and by whose means the water running from a roof, &c., of a building, towards a cistern or other receptable of rainwater, can be turned to run ofi', or may be directed to iiow into thexcistern. y
To enable others skilled in the art to make andAuse-our invention, we'will proceed to describe its construction and operation. We construct a square box, A, from tini or any other material, tobe inserted in leader pipe D D, amd open at the upper` and lower ends, and provided on the Vsides with braces, E, for the purposeof increasing its strength. To this box we construct an adjustable spout, B, which turns arounda hinge, C, and
can be'rem'oved for the purpose of cleaning by taking out the turning rod. Our spout,';B, `is provided at the, i", back end with a iiange, T, which when opened presses against the lower end of anextra leader, H,`provided "fn inside of the box A, so exeludinglthe possibility of any water running into the cisternas .long as the spout Bils y; kept open. For the purpose of keeping said spout B inl an open position as long as desired, we provide it with "i ,a hook, G, which, when spout B isV opened, is fastened tb. an eye, F. As long asit is desirable tokeep the cistern closed, to prevent dust or suds from falling in to it, 0r to prevent the runningA in of dirty water, which in the commencement of a rain 'always washes of the dust and other impurity from thef'roofs, we leave our spout B open, and fastened by hook G to-eye F. But as soon as the roof is suliciently cleaned, we unliook the same and shut box A, by turning up spout B, whereupon all the water is bound to run to the eistern.`
We claim as our invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent-l y The arrangements herein described for a. cut-oil for cistern leaders, consisting of a chamber A, and a. revolving and adjustable door B, set in' -the side thereof; said door being hinged in the middle, and when turned down itself serving as a spout, for the purpose and in the manner asdescribed.
WILLIAM M. HICKS, Y WELCKER.
