LUIGI KOST AND EUGENIO GUOOCHI, OF MILAN, ITALY.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR STOPPERS OF BOTTLES, 80G.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,815, dated August 30, 1898.
A li ti filed June 7 1898. Serial No. 682,837. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may. concern: 7
Be it known that we, LUIGI KOST and EU- GENIO GUOGQHI, subjects of the King of Italy, and residents of Milan, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for the Stoppers of Bottles or Like Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The invention which forms the subject of the present application consists of a fastening device for the stoppers of bottles or other receptacles by which an adulteration of the contents is rendered impossible without the fact being made known to the purchaser of the said bottle or receptacle.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of the improved fastening device. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement of the same on a bottle before being used, and Fig. 3 shows the device applied to a bottle after being sealed.
The improved device comprises a metal ring a, which forms the essential part thereof. The said ring is provided with two arms or rings 1) b of unequal length, which are made of a thin piece of metal in one with the ring. The metal must be thin enough to permit the bending of the arms, but must not be capable of being easily melted and must not be in any way bent or forced out of shape by heat.
The bottle or receptacle is provided with a neck A-that is to say, with a part which is of smaller diameter than the body B of the bottle-the said bottle being provided at the end or the upper part of the neckwith an ordinary rim 0.
While the bottle or receptacle is in course of construction and before the rim 0 is formed, the ring a is placed over the neck A of the bottle, so that a separation of the ring from the bottle is impossible.
The device is used in the following manner: After the vessel has been filled and corked the ring a is brought into the position shown in Fig. 3, the arms or wings I) b are bent together, whereby the ends s t s t of the said arms or wings are brought into the same plane and in this position are connected together or sealed by placing a piece of lead K on them and pressing the same with a pair of pliers in a manner similar to that adopted in customs-houses for securing or sealing packages of goods.
From the foregoing description it will be evident that it is impossible to remove the contents of the bottle without disturbing the lead seal and the ring a and without the fact that the seal has been tampered with being made evident to the purchaser of the bottle or the like.
The arrangement of the notches p p on the arms or wings I) b is for the purpose of insuring an intimate connection of the lead with the strips.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is-- In combination with a bottle having a reduced neck and a rim 0, a seal consisting of a ring a intact throughout and fitting closely the neck, said ring having extensions to pass over the top of the bottle-closure, substantially as described.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
