To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RALPH L. AKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Removable Covers orBackings for Books, Papers, Blotters, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of referencemarked thereon, which' form apart of this specification.

My invention is in the nature of a removable cover for books and the like, and the invention relates more especially to a detachable cover for memorandum or note books to enable the quick removal of the cover from the book when it has served its purpose and to supply the cover with a new book.

The invention has for its primary object to provide a removable cover for books, 850.,

which can be readily detached, is neat in appearance, and which may be suitablyornamented and serves admirably for the display of an advertising-card.

A further object is to provide a cover of the character hereinabove stated comprising a spring-like backing adapted to clamp the bound portion ofthe book and a pair of covers, said covers being hinged to said backing by a flexible connection of leather or other suitable material to permit of the covers being opened to their fullest extent,'and also obviating the danger of the covers becoming detached from the backing at the joint of connection, as is the case when the covers are directly attached to the backing, as in the constructions heretofore made.

The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of removable cover for books, 650., hereinafter set forth, and also in such other novel arrangements and combinations of parts and in the details of construction thereof as will be described in the accompanying specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is clearly illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top View of a book andits removable cover embodying the principles of my present invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the several parts illustrated in said Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the book before being inserted in the backing connected withthe removable cover; and Fig. 4 is a detail section, on an enlarged scale, of the backing and the two covers hinged thereto by means of a flexible connection.

Similar letters of reference are employedin all of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In said drawings, a indicates the book proper, comprising therein the leaves a, which are bound together at a in any wellknown manner.

The bound portion a of the book a may be provided with a detachable backing b, preferably made of a plastic material, as celluloid, or a metal backing may be employed, if

desired; but it will be understood that said backing b is not essential and may be entirely dispensed with. The said backing b has its two edges 1) bent inwardly to thoroughly clasp the bound portion a of the book a, and can be slipped into a correspondingly-formed backing (1, which is lined onits inner surface with a flexible piece of material f, of leather or the like, said material being cemented, glued, or otherwise secured to said inner surface of the backing f. Said backing f may be made of a plastic material, as celluloid, or of metal. The flexible material fhas its ends f projecting beyond the clamping or holding ends d of the backing d, and cemented, glued, or otherwise secured to the flexible ends f of said flexible connection f are the two covers e and e. A desirable space g is left between the edges cl of the backing d and the ends 6 of the two covers 6 and e, as will be clearly seen from Figs. 1, 2, and 4, so as to expose a portion of the flexible connection f to produce a perfectly-operating hinge-joint, which permits the covers to be opened wide and thrown way back and the opening of the leaves a of. the book a to their fullest limit.

It will thus be seen that when the book a ZOO in place, and in this manner any number of books can be substituted one for the other without the least danger of the covers 6 and e becoming detached from the backing d, the space g between the backing d and the covers permitting the flexible connection to operate readily, which allows the covers to be thrown back and the leaves of the book to be opened freely and closed with facility.

In the manufacture of the removable backings and covers for books, 850., I prefer to make the several forms of backings, as well as the covers hereinabove described, of a plastic matter, such as celluloid or the like, whereby the cost of construction is greatly reduced and the beauty of the article greatly enhanced. At the same time the plastic material will present no sharp edges, as is the case where backings or covers of metal are employed, and there is no danger of cutting the fingers in taking up the article, and in the case of a note or memorandum book there will be no danger of cutting the linings of the pocket in which the book is carried.

It will also be evident that when the backings or covers aremade of a plastic material their curved holding portions can be readily molded without any danger of the turn ed portion breaking or presenting unsightly creases, as is so often the case when these parts are made from metal. The plastic material furthermore presents a surface of high polish and a hard surface of great durability,which is not liable to the wear of metal, the plastic material retaining the design or imprint on its surface for a long period of ordinary wear Without deterioration in its finish.

It will also be evident that the holding or clamping portion of the backings or covers, when made from plastic material, being molded, the shape thus given becomes its normal shape, and there is no disposition in the part of the backing at its curved holding portion to open up, as is the tendency when these parts are stamped up in metal, but the tendency is rather to resist the withdrawal of the book or papers from the backing, which conduces to the permanence of the construction of the device.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim is 1. The combination, with a book, and a detachable backing I) having grasping edges 1) for grasping the bound portion of the book, of a removable cover, consisting, essentially, of a backing d having grasping edges d adapted to be slipped over said backing b, and covers connected with said backing d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, with a book, and a detachable backing I) having grasping edges b for grasping the bound portion of the book, of a removable cover, consisting, essentially, of a backing 01 having grasping edges (1 adapted to be slipped over said backing d, a pair of covers, and a flexible connection connecting said covers With said backing d in such a manner, to form open spaces g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The combination, with a book, and a detachable backing I) having grasping edges 1), all molded from a plastic material and adapted to grasp the bound portion of the book, of a backing d having grasping edges d,all molded from a plastic material and adapted to be slipped over said backing b, a pair of covers, and a flexible connection connecting said covers with said backing d, in such a manner, to form open spaces g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
