VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,697, dated August 9, 1898.
Application filed May 28, 1898. Serial No. 682,014. (No model.) I
A To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES B. MOORE and JAMES M. YOUNG, residents of Watertown, in the county of Nilson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in Vises, the object of the invention being to provide a vise that will be extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, strong and durable when in use, and one that can be operated quickly and effectually with but little exertion on the part of the operator.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of our device, and Fig. 2 is a front view of same.
Arepresents the stationary jaw of the vise, and B the movable jaw. The jaw A is provided on one side with a shoulder or extended portion 1, secured to said jaw by any approved means and adapted to receive on its upper edge the lower edge of the movable jaw B and support same thereon.
A hole 2 is provided in the stationary jaw A in alinement with a hole 3 in the movable jaw B, the holes 2 and 3 being in alinement with a hole 4 in an operating arm or lever 5. A bolt 6 is adapted to pass through said holes 2, 3, and 4: and is provided with a thumb-nut '7, adapted to be screwed on said bolt 6 and regulate the outward movement of the movable jaw.
A hole 8 is provided in the stationary jaw in alinement with a hole 9 in the movable jaw to receive a bolt 10, on which is screwed a nut 11, adapted to prevent the-movement of the movable jaw out of line with the shoulder 1, and saidv nut can be adjusted on the bolt to give a greater or less adjustment to the movable jaw.:
The movable jaw 13 is provided on its outer face with elongated oppositely disposed wedges or cams a b.
The arm or lever 5 is pivotally mounted between its ends on the bolt 6, whereby when to engage the wedges and force the movable jaw against the object to be clamped and se curely Wedge the jaw against movement. To insure the accurate engagement of the lever with wedges or cams, the edges of said lever are beveled or rounded, as at 0 cl. When it is desired to release the object clamped between the jaws, it is simply necessary to force the long end of the lever downward, when the object can be removed without difficulty.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we would have it understood that We do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-- 1. In a vise, the combination with a stationary and movable jaw, of a shoulder on said stationary jaw adapted to support the mov able jaw, bolts connecting said jaws, wedges on the movable jaw and an arm or lever adapted to bear against said wedges and move the jam-substantially as set forth.
2. In a vise, the combination with a stationary and movable jaw, of a shoulder on said stationary jaw adapted to engage said'movable jaw, bolts passing through said jaws, a nut screwed on the lower bolt, a thumb-nut screwed on the otherbolt, wedges on the mov able jaw, and an arm or lever provided with a hole through which the last-mentioned bolt is adapted to pass, said arm or lever adapted to engage said wedges and force the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw and securely In testimony whereof We have signed this hold the same in its adjusted position. specification in the presence of two s-nbserib- 1o 3.
