WATERPROOF TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 608,126, dated J' uly 26, 1898. Application filed November 9, 1896. Serial No. 611,547. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. 4ISAACSON,`
This invention relates to a novel improve-- ment in waterproof garments.
The object of my invention is to provide waterproof trousers which shall be adapted to be used in conjunction with an ordinary pair of rubberboots andso arranged that the boots may be worn independent of the trousers' or that the trousers may be worn independent of the boots; and in the furtherance of this object I provide the trousers at the bottom of the leg with a clamping device, by means of which they can be detachably secured to the boots to make a water-tight connection.
To aid in explaining my invention I make use ofthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a pair of the trousers with boots attached. Fig. 2 represents a partial vertical section of one of the legs thereof on the line 2 2. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the clamping-ring. Fig. 4 is a detail lon gi* tudinal sectional view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified construction. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the band or ring illustrated in Fig. 3, showing a modified construction.
In all of the ligures the same numerals indicate the same part.
l is a pair of mackintosh or waterproof trousers of a general form and construction well known in the art, in the legs 2 whereof is made a hem 3, inclosing the ring or band 4, comprising two parts or sections 5. A lug 6 is formed on one end of each section 5, its opposite end being tapered to a knife-edge, a short distance back from which is a second lug 6. Through each pair of lugs 6 6a, the lugs being on different sections, is passed a right and left handed screw-bolt 7, which is threaded into the aforesaid lugs. The lugs and bolt as thus arranged form a turnbuckle, by means of which the baud et is clamped around the trousers and boot. A th umb-piece 8 on one end of the screw-bolt and a squared portion on the opposite end for a key (not shown) present means for turning the bolt.
-In a boot 9 of ordinary construction an elliptic or similarly-formed band l0 of metal is cemented or otherwise secured upon the interior of the leg portion and near the top thereof. When both trousers and boot are in place upon the leg, the band 4. is adapted to be slipped over the leg of the boot until it registers with the band 10, when the former is tightened by means of its turnbuckles, already described, forming both a secure and watertight joint. The tapered end of each section 5, extending across the opening between the lugs 6 6, will prevent the trousers from entering between the said lugs, the .result of which would be an imperfect joint between the trousers andboot.
In the manufacture of the trousers I prefera rubber fabric, as the same possesses sufficient elasticity to pass over the boot-leg and conform closely thereto; but I do not confine myself to this material, as by the use of a bellows gusset in the bottom of the trousers-leg I may utilize non-elastic fabrics.
The material of the several bands is likewise of non-importance, though I preferably employ one of a stiff yet resilient nature for reasons quite apparent.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1s l. In a waterproof garment, the combination with a pair of trousers, of a fold or hem formed on the lower end of each leg thereof, and means secured in said fold for contracting and expanding the bottom of the trousersleg, substantially as set forth.
2. In a waterproof garment, the combination with a pair of trousers having a hem or fold at the lower end of each leg thereof, of a sectional clamping-band secured within the fold of each leg, and meansfor expanding and contracting the said band and thereby the bot- Vtom of the trousers-leg, substantially as set forth.
3. In a waterproof garment, the combination with a pair of trousers formed with an inward fold or hem at the bottom of each leg thereof, of a sectional clamping-band irre- In testimony whereof I ax my signature movably secured Within said fold, each secin presence of two Witnesses. tion having a. tapered end which s overlapped by the butt-end of its adjacent section, and
5 means for expanding and contracting the said Witnesses:
-seotonal band, and thereby the bottom of the JAMES B. HAYNES,
tronsers1eg, substantially as set forth. F. J. SUT'CLIFFE.
