U llnirnn STATES CARL TI-IEODOR GOTTLIEB SOHNEIDEWIND, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
DRIVING MECHANISM FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,008, dated July 26, 1898.
Application filed May 28, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL THEODOR GOTT- LIEB SOHNEIDEWIND, of the free city of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented a new and useful Driving Mechanism with Lever and Friction-Disk for Vehicles, Velocipedes, and the Like, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the present invention consists of a new drivin g-gear for vehicles,velocipedes, and the like, and is suitable for driving by hand or foot, so that persons who for some reason or other are unable to use their feet are able to drive this mechanism. This is in the first place considerably facilitated by the fact that the mechanism is propelled by a simple up-and-down motion of one or more levers.
In the accompanying drawings, representing the new gear, Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Figs. 3 to 8 are explanatory figures.
Upon the axle a is a toothed wheel I). (See Figs. 3 and 4 in elevation and section.) This wheel I) is loose upon the spindle and is pro vided with a projecting circular flange c, the inner surface of which is turned. The boss at is also turned smooth. Upon this boss a piece 6, Fig. 5 in elevation, is placed, which carries the pins f f, which are arranged at right angles thereto. Upon each of these pins I a clamp g g, respectively, (see Figs. 6 and 7,
elevation section,) is arranged, which are rounded off at their upper and lower ends and are slightly longer than the distance between the hub 61 and the inner surface of 0. These clamps can turn freely toward one side upon the pins ff without, however, being able to pass the hub. Finally, the lever h is revolubly arranged upon the hub and is also provided with two perpendicular pins 1' 11, upon which a disk rests. These pins 2' i" pass right through the disk It and engage with corresponding holes i i in the clamp-pieces g g, so that upon moving the lever h in a certain direction the clamppieces g g must turn upon the pins ff. these clamp-pieces are somewhat longer than the distance between the outer periphery of the hub 01 and the inner periphery of c. The
clamps are so supported upon the pins f f that upon pressing down the lever hthey are As already mentioned,
serial No. 638,521. (No model.)
jammed between the hub 01 and projecting flange c, and the tooth-wheel bis thus forced to rotate in the same direction as the lever. Upon raising the lever the clamps are again freed and slide freely uponthe peripheries of the projecting flange and the hub.
The projecting flange 0 can be replaced by an independent disk Z, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the same is securely fastened to the tooth-whee1 b by the extension of the hub Z, as shown in Fig. 1. From this arrangement it will be seen that by an alternate up-anddown motion of the lever a continuous rotation of the tooth-wheel would be obtained.
In order to raise the second lever upon the downward motion of the first, both levers are provided with a slot m, in which a rod n is guided, which has a boss at its middle and turns upon the spindle p. It is by this arrangement that the above-mentioned end is obtained. I
The rotation of the tooth-wheel b can be transferred as desired-as, for instance, on a bicycle-by the insertion of another toothwheel .9, Figs. 1 and 2, which gears with the tooth-wheel b and is securely fastened to the chain-wheel A, which latter transfers the motion to the hind wheel of the bicycle by means of the chain. With this arrangement alarger or smaller gear can be obtained, according to desire, without the need or exercising of great trouble by changing the wheel 3.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- A driving-gear for vehicles, velocipedes and the like, comprising a wheel having a circular flange and a hub, a piece rotatably mounted with respect to said wheel, a clamp pivoted to said piece and engaging at its outer and inner ends respectively with said flange and said hub, and a driving-lever carrying pins engaging with said clamp, so as to cause it to engage the flange and hub and rotate the wheel when the lever is moved in one direction, and to release the clamp from the wheel when the lever is moved in the other direction.
Inwitness whereof I have hereuntoset my hand in presence of two witnesses;
CARL THEODOR GOTTLIEB SCHNEI DEWIND.
