Beit known that I, CHARLES A. CURL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver andl State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Extension-Table, of which the following is a specification. l

My invention relates to improvements in extension-tables; and the object' that I have in view is to provide means'for safely storing the detachable leaves of the table-top when they are not in use and the table is collapsed or folded to its compact position.

In extension-tables it is desirable to store the detachable leaves on the table-frame, so that they may be always at hand for adjustmentl in the table and to obviate the necessity for making a separate package or bundle of the leaves in shipment or transportation. Prior to my invention it has been proposed to attain this end by making the table-frame serve as a support for the leaves, which are stacked one upon the other or are fitted separate'ly in grooves between the slides, which form in part the table-frame. Such devices render it necessary to withdraw the leaves from the ends of the table-frame through openings therein, which openings are closed by slides; but such construction isobjectionable for many reasons. I aim to overcome the 0bjections to such prior devices and provide a' support of large capacity on which the severalleaves are independently placed for removal of either leaf without hindrance from the other leaves. y Theinterior dimensions of the ordinary size of table-frame are not sufficient fora single support to accommodate all of the leaves, usually four in nnrnber, by. a single device, and hence I resort to theusev of two lsupports orshelves arranged in different horizontal planes for the ease of placement or removal of the leaves thereon. f The shelves or crates for the leaves extend across from one side of the frame to the other, and they are larranged to permit access to'be obtained thereto through the top'of the table when in its extended position, thus overcoming the necessity for perforating the ends of the table-frame.

. My invention therefore consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinfter fully described and claimed.

To enable others to understand the invention, Ihave illustrated the preferred embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Y Figure 1 is a plan view of one construction of the table, showing the top extended or opened to expose the upper shelf. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view with the table in its extended position and the upper shelf removed to expose the lower shelf and the table-leaves resting thereon. Fig. 3 is a vertical section with the table-frame and its top closed, illustrating the leaves on the two shelves. Fig.' 4 is a plan view of another embodiment of the invention, showingthe top in its closed position. Fig. 5 is a plan View with the frame and top extended, illustrating the operation of removing leaves from the lower shelf. Fig is a vertical section through the table in the position shown by Fig. 5, the dotted lines representing the operation of inserting or removing a leaf on the lower 'shelf or support.

In the embodiment of the invention represented by Figsfl to 3, inclusive, they tableytop 1 is divided centrally into two sections 2 and 3 of equal area. As is usual in the art, the table is constructed with a central frame 4, which is vequipped with a leg or legs 5, and

to this central frameis fitted the'slid'esl and 7, which support the respective sections 2 and 3 ofthe table-top. Each slide 6 or 7 vis of the doubled or two-part construction familiar to those skilled in the art, the two members of each slide being slidably fitted together to slide one upon the other, and one member is slidablyitted to the table-frame, and with the eXtensible slides 6 and 7 for the sections of the table-top are associated the legs 2a and 3, respectively. The detachable leaves 7 n of the table are adapted to beplaced on the slides 6 and 7 and arranged in the horizontal plane of the sections forming the table-top; but when the table-top is contracted or folded IOO to its most compact position these leaves 7 are removed. As heretofore explained, it is desirable in the art to have the leaves 7 arranged eompaetly within the table-'frame for promoting the convenience of the operatorin extending or contracting the table and for compact storage of the several parts preparatory to transporting or shipping the table.

My invention provides a structure which meets the requirements in a simple, cheap, and desirable way, and to attain the object of the invention l employ two shelves S and il, which are arranged in different horizontal planes within the table-'frame -l and extend from side to side thereof. These shelves are of sufficient area to accommodate the entire series of detachable leaves which is supplied with t-he table, and the leaves maybe placed on said shelves in a manner to secure the independent removal of the leaves, each leaf being readily accessible through the top of the table when the latter is extended for removal from its shelf without disturbing the position of the other leaves. rl`he lower shelf S is designed to be secured permanently to the opposing sides of the table-frame l, and this attachment of the lower shelf maybe effected by screws, cleats, or other suitable fasteners. The upper shelf 9, however, in a table which has its top divided centrally, is supported removably in place above the lower shelf S, and in the preferred embodiment of the invention I employ cleats 10, which are Iixcd to the opposite sides of the table-frame t in a horizontal plane above the lower shelf S. These shelves S and il in the two-part table-top frame are arranged in the same vertical plane,and to permit access to be obtained to the lower shelf S without involving perforation of the ends of the table-frame I support the upper shelf 9 removably in place on the cleats l0. It is evident that the opening of the table top by drawing the slides G 7 and the top sections 2 outwardly will expose the upper shelf 9 to view through the table-top, thus permitting the leaves thereon to be removed, and, if desired, the upper shelf 9 may itself be lifted out of the table frame and away from the cleats l0 thereon. The removal of the upper shelf 0 exposes to view the lower shelf 8 and its leaves, and the latter may in like manner be lifted out of the table-frame, the shelf S remaining attached to the frame, so as to form a permanent fixture of the table. The leaves when removed may be placed in the table so as to rest upon the frame and slides thereof and lie in the horizontal plane of the top sections 2 and 3; but to reduce the area of the table the leaves are removed therefrom. The upper shelf 0 having been removed from its supporting-cleats lO in the frame, a certain number of the leaves may be placed on the lower shelf S, after which the shelf 9 is replaced in the frame to rest upon Ithe cleats. The remaining leaves are placed on the said upper shelf tl and the table is closed to bring the sections 2 3 of the top together, thereby entirely concealing the leaves and the shelves from view.

In the embodiment of the invention represented by Figs. l to (5, inclusive, the tabletop is in three sections, which are indicated by the numerals ll, 12, and l). Ol.' these sections the one designated as ll is fixed permanently to the table-frame 11, while the sections l2 and 13 are attached to the double slides 6 and 7, to be carried therewith in their endwise adjustments for enlarging or contracting the area of the table-top. My improvement is susceptible of use advantageously in connection with tables having the tops thereof made in three sections, and in the embodiment represented by Figs. dto G, inclusive, the shelves ll and l5 are arranged within the table-frame l in different horizontal planes. The shelves 14: and 15 in this embodiment of the invention are attached in fixed positions to the table-frame, so as to form permanent fixtures thereon; but to enable aceess to be obtained to the lower shelf as well as the upper shelf they are arranged to have one end of the upper shelf projected. beyond the corresponding end of the lower shelf, thus arranging each shelf in position for the opposite ends thereof to terminate in different vertical planes from the corresponding ends of the other shelf. The upper shelf ll is attached to the table-frame 4, to have its left-hand edge projected beyond the corresponding edge of the permanent section ll ofthe table-top,while its right-hand edge lies a considerable distance within the corresponding edge of said permanent table-top section ll. The lower shelf l5 is attached tothe tableframe in a position for its right-hand edge to extend beyond the corresponding edge ofthe permanent table-top section ll; but this lefthand edge is within the corresponding edges of the top section 1l and the upper shelf Ll. Each shelf is thus made of a length less than that of the permanent top section 1], andthe opposite ends of the shelves are exposed to view when the slides and top sections l2 lf3 are drawn outwardly.

The slides andthe top sections having been extended their full limits the leaves on the upper shelf ll are exposed at one edge of the table-section ll, so that they maybe lifted slightly and drawn out endwi se from the lefthandpart of the table, as shown by Figs. 5 and 6, and in like manner theleaves on the lower shelf l5 are exposed at the right-hand end of the table, thus permitting said leaves on the shelf l5 to be raised slightly to inclined positions and in like manner drawn out from the table, also as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 5 and (l.

The shelves may be of any suit-able construction-that is to say, they may consist of thin pieces of wood reinforced by suitable strips or of the slatted or grate-like construction shown by the drawings.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim isl. In an extension-table, the central framesection, the permanent horizontal shelf extending across 'said central frame-section, the shelf-supports secured to the sides ofthe central frame-section on a horizontal plane above the permanent shelf, and aA horizontal removable shelf fitted Within the central frame-section to rest upon the shelf-supports and sustained in an elevated position thereby parallel to the permanent shelf, combined with extension frame members slidably tted to the central frame-section for adjustment Without hindrance from the shelves, vand a a series of leaves adapted to be individually stored on theV permanent .and removable shelves, substantially as described.

2. In an extension-table, the central framelsection carrying a permanent top section, a

horizontal permanent shelf secured Within said frame-section to extend across from side to side thereof and having one edge exposed beyond the plane of the permanent top section, the shelf-supports secured to the sides of the central frame-section and on ahorizontal plane above the permanent shelf, and another horizontal shelf resting on the shelfsupports Within the frame-section in parallel relation to theY permanent shelf and having one edge of said shelf extended beyond the other edge of the permanent top section, combined with extension frame-sections slidably fitted to the central frame member for adjustment-in relation thereto Without hindrance from the shelves, and removable leaves adapted to be stored individually on the upper and lower shelves, substantially as described.
