CARL FRITZ DElVITT, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
TH ERMOCAUTER.
SPEGIFiCATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,380, dated J une 28, 1898. Application filed November 13, 1897. Serial No. 659,062. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL FRITZ DEWITT, a subject of the King of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, residing at Berlin, Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Burnin g Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the 531116.
The objectof the present invention is a vapor-burning apparatus for medical and other purposes which is rendered eminently suitable for its work by the'special arrangement and combination of its parts.
The apparatus according to the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Figure 1 in elevation, the heating-point being omitted in Fig. 2, being an elevation at right angles to that of Fig. 1, the air vessel and point being omitted, Fig. 3 being a separate view of the heating-point.
The apparatus, like the hitherto usual apparatus, consists of benzin-receptacle A, bellows 13, air vessel 0, and heating-point D. The combination of these parts is rendered specially effective by arranging the benzin-receptacle A side by side with the bellows B and making them of such shape as to enable the operator to hold both conveniently in one hand. The metal benzin-receptacle is made, for instance, in the form of a longitudinal half of an egg, the rubber bellows being made of the same shape and the two being connected by metal clamps a. The two thus form an oval or egg shaped body; but of course they may also be in the form of a cylinder or a ball or of other desired shape.
The benzin-receptacle is filled through an opening closed by a screw-plug b, and air is supplied to the apparatus from the air vessel 0 through a tube 0 and a pipe d, coiled up in the interior of the benzin receptacle in several coils, as indicated in dotted lines, its end terminating at about the center of the receptacle. The gas mixture is discharged through a smaller pipe e, the mouth 6 of which is arranged close to the mouth of the pipe d, and
passes at f into a hollow chamber F,filled with sponge, to intercept any liquid benzin that may have been taken up with the vapors and to subsequently vaporize it. This hollow chamber F is provided with a three-way cock E,having a branch h for the tube connecting it with the heating-point, and another branch for a burner 2', which serves for starting the apparatus. Theburner 2' consists of a hollow body of cylindrical or other shape filled with asbestos and closed at the end by a plate '70, having fine perforations. WVhenthe gas mixture is introduced into this burner 2' by turning the plug of the three-way cock, it escapes in fine jets through the plate 71'! and can be lighted to start the apparatus. In this position of the cook the passage to the heatingpoint D is also open, so that when the latter becomes slightly heated a little gas passes also into it, which is of great importance for its proper maintenance. tus has been heated, the cock-plug is turned so that the gas mixture can enter only the tube of the heating-point, so that the starting-flame at iis extinguished and a strong current of gas is supplied to the point.
The apparatus is worked simply by taking hold with one hand of the parts A and B and thus operating the bellows. The plug of the cock can at the same time be manipulated by means of a finger of the same hand without necessitating the use of the other hand, which remains quite free for guiding the heated point.
It is of considerable importance in the apparatus according to the present invention that the benzin is vaporized more easily and quickly owing to the heat of the hand. The apparatus may be held in any position with= out any danger of the liquid benzin escaping with the vapors, as the mouths or openings of the air-supply and gas-discharge pipes are arranged in the center of the benzin-receptacle, and the latter when charged is not filled up to its. middle, as determined by the given quantity.
Owing to the described arrangement the apparatus fulfils all the requirements for good working and considerably facilitates the manipulation of the heated point.
The tube h of Figs. 1 and 2 is the same tube It shown in Fig. 3 and is of any convenient length. The point or cauterizing-toolD is of any approved oonstruction such as, for instance, the point shown in the patent to F.
When the appara Drum, No. 574,719, dated January 5, 1897. The regulating valve E and the bellowsvalves are also of any approved construction. The ignition of the gas in the point may be effected by the burner K or any other convenient flame,
Nhat I claim is 1. In a thermocauter, the combination, with a bellows and a receptacle for liquid hydrocarbon arranged side by side so that they may be grasped by one hand, and fastening devices connecting together the said parts; of an air vessel connected with the bellows, an air-pipe connected with the air vessel and projecting within the said receptacle, and an on tlet-pipe for gas projecting within the said receptacle and provided with a regulating-valve, substantially as set forth.
2. In a thcrinocauter, the combination, with air vessel and projecting within the said res ceptacle, and an outlet-pipe for gas projecting within the said receptacle and provided with a regulating-valve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have afifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL FRITZ DEWITT.
Witnesses: HEINRICH HERZ, OTTO LIcoINoER.
