Be it known that I, JAMES O. GILLAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coffeyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented anew and useful Overshoe Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in attachments for overshoes, and has for its object to provide a device of this character adapted to be secured to an overshoe or the like at the heel portion thereof in order to permit the overshoe to be held to the foot at its heel portion, so as to prevent it from being displaced by mud or snow.

The invention consists in an attachment having a pivoted or swiveled connection with the heel portion of the overshoe and comprising a spring wire or band of metal adapted to be passed over the instep of the wearer and having at its free end an enlargement or head and an eye through which said enlargement or head is adapted to be passed in order to hold that end of the spring wire or band in place.

The invention also contemplates certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved attachment whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In order that my improvements may be the better understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawings an attachment constructed in accordance with myinvention, in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view showing an overshoe provided with the improved attachment in place thereon; and Fig.' 2 is a sectional view taken through the rear portionvof the overshoe, showing the means for attaching the improved device to the overshoe. In the views, l indicates the overshoe, and 2 indicates the spring wire or band of the attachment, which is designed to be passed over the instep of the wearer, this band being curved in form, as clearly shown in the drawings, and being provided at one end with an eye or loop 3, which is loosely engaged with a similar eye or hook L1, formed on the outer end of a pin 5, adapted'to be passed through the heel portion of the overshoe, as shown in Fig. 2, and having a plate or disk 6 adapted to engage the outer surface of the shoe.

The inner end of the pin 5 is passed through a circular centrally-perforated plate 7 and is riveted or headed onthe inner side thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that said pin 5 is securely held in place at the hee-l portion of the shoe, and by preference the arrangement of the parts will be such as to permit the pin'5 to turn in the heel portion of the overshoe, so as to give the attachment a pivoted or swiveled connection and enable it to accommodate itself to the various positions in which the wire or band 2 may stand. The other end of the wire or band 2, or that end'thereof opposite to the end Whereon is formed the loop or hook 3, is-provided with an enlargement or head 8, and said enlargement or head is adapted, after the wire or band 2 has been passed over the instep of the wearer, to be inserted through the eye or hook 4, formed on the outer end of the pin 5, so as to permit the freev end of the band or wire 2, whereon said head or enlargement isformed, to be secured to the overshoe in order to hold the heel portion thereof to the foot of the wearer. To permit of more `securely holding the enlarged end of the Wire or band4 2 to the eye or hook Ll, said headed end of the wire or band may be bent to form a hook or shoulder to engage the hook or eye 4, in which case the head 8 will form a convenient means for holding the end of the Wire or band while the same is being fastened.

By this construction and arrangement of the parts it will be seen that=theimproved IOC attachment is of an extremely simple and inexpensive construction and is especially well adapted for the purposes for which it is designed, since it provides a simple and convenient means for holding the heel portion of the overshoe to the foot of thewearer, so as to obviate the liability of the overshoe being pulled from the foot, and, furthermore, the arrangement of the spring is such that the free end of the band or Wire 2 may be ar- `ranged at either side of the shoe, as may be desired. y

It will also be obvious from the above description that the invention is capable of some modification Without departure from its principles and spirit, and for this reason I do not Wish-to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts herein set forth.

Having thus described my invention, I Claim- 1. The combination with -a shoe, of -a 4pin having a swiveled connection to the heel portion of the shoe and provided with an eye at its outer end, and a band or Wire of spring material having one end loosely connected with the eye, said band being curved and adapted to be passed over the instep of the' wearer, and being provided at its opposite end With ahead or enlargement to be passed through the eye of the sWiveled pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination With a shoe, of a pin inserted through the heel portion of the shoe and having its outer end bent to form an eye and provided with a plate or disk to engage the outer surface of the shoe, a perforated plate fitted over the inner end of the pin to engage the inner face of the shoe, the inner end of the pin being headed to hold said plate in place, a spring wire or band having at one end an eye loosely engaged with the eye on the outer end of the pin, said Wire or band being curved to pass over the instep of the wearer and having at its free end a head or enlargement adapted to be passed through the eye at the outer end of the pin,l substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
