Allomey UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID W. HUGHES, OF VANDALIA, MISSOURI.
EGG-TESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,971, dated October 19, 1897.
Application filed January 11, l 89 '7.
To all whom/'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID W. HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van-v. dalia, in the 'county of Audrain and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Testers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a device for testing eggs; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan of a device constructed in accordance with this invention, with the upper rack ex- I tended. Fig. 2 is a sectional View with the upper rack closed upon the lower rack.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates a box that is provided with a bottom 2, the upper face of which is a reflector. The said box is provided with two hinged frames 3, carrying racks 4. These frames 3 are hinged separately to the box and the openings in the lower frame are elliptical, as shown, while the openings in the upper rack are circular. The openings in the two racks are made to register with each other, as shown, and each rack is provided with a central opening 5, around which the other openings G are arranged. The lower face of the lower frame and rack as well as the inner face of the sides ofthe box are dull and irreiiective, so that within the box the reflecting-bottom is the only portion that reflects light. Situated within the central circular opening 5 is a ball 7, provided with an openingin which is situated a lens 8. The eggs are intended to be placed within the openings 6 of the racks, and to make a close joint between the eggs and the opening it is preferable to cover the lower face of the rack with a flexible material, such Serial No. 618,707. (No model.)
upper frame is moved outwardly and the eggs y placed within the openings 6, resting, it might be said, upon their sides. They can then be examined through the central opening Very accurately by means of the lens and ball. It will be noticed that the ball can be turned in any direction to examine any particular egg, and to complete the inspection the eggs can be removed and the upper frame closed down, after which the eggs are placedupon their ends and examined as before.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by .Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the kind specified, a box provided with Va reflective bottom and irreiective sides, two hinged frames to close said box, one of said frames being provided with a central opening, elliptical openings, surrounding the same, and an irreiiective lower face and the other being provided with a central opening, and circular openings surrounding the same.
2. In a device of the kind specified, a reflective bottom and irretlective sides, a hinged frame to cover said box provided with a central opening and surrounding openings, and
having an irreilective lower face and a ball provided with a lens situated within said central opening.-
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID WV. HUGHES.
