HOLDER FOR CIGARETTES OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY H. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Cigarettes or Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.

' The principal objects of my invention are,

-first, to provide a box or holder adapted for.

cigarettes or the like and arranged so that by hand manipulation the cigarettes or the like may be readily removed in sequence without chafing the wrapper thereof; second, to pro- 1 5 vide a holder for cigarettes, cheroots, or similar articles consisting of two members adapted to be readily assembled or taken apart and to be manipulated by hand to effect a quick or ready removal of the articles one by one therefrom; and, third, to provide a holderfor cigarettes or similar articles consisting of two members adapted to fit into one another so as to be slid back and forth, and the cigarettes or similar articles held under'delicate spring tension within one member, and by manipulation of one of said members the said articles to be shifted into a position under the spring tension in which the cigarettes or similar articles are held to permit of the liberation of the same singly from the box or holder, and at the same time said members readily detachable for refilling when emptied of the contents thereof.

My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a holder for cigarettes or similar articles, when constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.

The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder or box, in a closed position, embodying features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the two members of the holder or box, partly in broken section and ina partly open position, and also showing the engaging means connected with the respective members for holding together the same, yet

at the same time permitting of a sliding toand-fro movement thereof to release singly cigarettes or similar articles therefrom. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the interior of the box or holder, showing the cigarettes mounted therein, one partially liberated, and said articles held under spring tension in the box or holder and Fig. 4. is a vertical sectional view on the line 00 a: of Fig. 3.

The member a is designated'as the box and is provided with'three vertical surrounding walls 5, 6, and 7. In the side walls 5 and 7 of the box are provided internal projections 8 and 9, forming one of the members of a lock or catch of the box or holder. In the end wall 6, at or near one end, is provided a slot 10, and the base of the box at the end M, in which the same is not provided with an end wall, there is struck up a lug 11, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The member a is designated as the cover, and is provided with surrounding walls 12, 13, and 14, the side walls 12 and la being provided with complemental internal projections 16 and 17, adapted to engage and slide with the projections 8 and 9 of the box a. At one end of the cover is provided a pocket 18, in the inner wall of which is formed an oblong slot 19 and beyondwhich in the wall of said pocket 18 is formed a transverse internal proj ection 20, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, which is provided in order to prevent chafing of the cigarettes in the operations of the cover a, tending to-liberate the same within the holder, so as to readily remove the same.

In the wall 14 of the member a are formed transverse projections 21 and 22, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that during liberation of cigarettes from companion ones by the shifting of the same by manipulations 5 of the cover a into a position to removethem singly from the box the cigarette-wrapper may not be chafed or destroyed.

The assembling of the parts and mode of operation of the box or holder, as hereinbe- 10o fore described, is as follows: The members a and a are brought together by permitting the lug 11 of the box a to enter the oblong slot 19 of the cover a by slightly springing the sides to cause the projections 8 and 9 and 16 and 17 of the two members to engage one another and at the same time to permit of a sliding movement of one with respect to the other. The cigarettes or the like in the meantime will be mounted in the member a, under the tension of the delicate leaf-spring S, and the cover a is then slid back by a hand manipulation to shift a cigarette or the like to the right into engagement with the lug l1, and by then causing the cover a to be brought into substantially a closed position, as illustrated in Fig. l, the cigarette or the like will be projected slightly beyond the slot 10 in the box a, so as to be readily then withdrawn for use, and by similar operations resorted to all the cigarettes or the like in the same manner may be removed and the holder refilled by a slight pressure exerted on the cover a of the box a when in a partially open position.

Having thus described the nature and obi jects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A holder for cigarettes &c., consisting of two complemental shells, whereof one is provided with a slot 10, in one end wall, a lug 11, projecting from the edge of the open end and indentations in the side vertical walls forming projections 8 and 9, and whereof the other member is provided with a slotted internal pocket having a transverse projection 20, internal indentations forming projections 21 and 22, in the side vertical walls, and a leafspring S, mounted in said pocket and the respective ends bearing against one of the side walls and the inserted articles of said pocket, substantially as described.
