Nirnn STATES PATENT WRENCH.
SPECIFiGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,167, dated October 5, 1897.
Application filed May 11, 1897. Serial No. 636,056. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW I-IAMMAR- STROM and OTTO, CARLSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Ourinvention has relation to wrenches, and more particularly to wrenches of the ratchet type.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and provide a wrench which may be easily worked either right or left in ratchet fashion to screw or unscrew a part and which may also be used as an ordinary wrench without the ratchet feature.
With this object in View the invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be herein after fully set forth and claimed. I r
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of our-improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view through the head. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the ratchet-hub. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the pawls, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the adjusting bandor ring.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the handle of the wrench, provided with a head 2, having an annular recess 3, intersected by transverse pawl-recesses 4, in which are pivot-ed pawls 5, the free ends of which project lengthwise of the handle and are surrounded by an adjusting-band 6, having a lip 7.
8 denotes the ratchet-hub, which is provided with a ratchet-face 9, adapted to be engaged by the pawls. This ratchet-hub has also an annular groove 10, which is adapted to be engaged by ribs 11 upon the pawls, and thus serve to hold the hub in position in the hub of the handle-bar. The hub is formed with asquare socket to receive the square portion of the nut-socket, which has projecting therefrom a screw-threaded stud 12, which is engaged by a cap-nut 13, thereby holding the nut-socketin position.
In operation in screwing on a nut the ad justing-band is turned so as to bring its lip into engagement with and depress the straight end of one of the pawls, thus throwing its opposite end out of engagement with the ratchetface on the hub and allowing the wrench to connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction and operation of the wrench will be apparent without requiring an extended explanation.
An important feature of thepresent invention is in providing the hub with the annular groove, which is adapted to be engaged by the curved ribs on the inner faces of the pawls, thereby establishing an interlocking joint, which while permitting of one part rotating'independently of the other will prevent the hub becoming accidentally disengaged from the hub of the handle, as one of the ribs is at all times engaged in said groove.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench composed of a handle -lever formed with a head having a circular recess and provided with pawl-recesses, spring-actuated pawls pivoted in their recesses and provided on their working faces with curved ribs, an adjusting band surrounding the handle and provided with a projecting lip to hold the pawls into engagement with the hub,
a ratchet-hub located in said circular recess and provided with a ratchet-face to be engaged by the pawls, and with an annular groove to be engaged by the ribs on the pawls, and with a square socket and a nut-socket having a square portion adapted to said square socket, and having a screw-threaded stud which projects entirely through the head of the handle-lever and is provided with a securing-nut, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof We hereunto afiix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
ANDREl/V HAMMARSTROM. OTTO GARLSON. Witnesses:
