Be it known that- I, JOHN V. HEMSTREET, a citizen of the wUnited States, residin g at Herkiiner, in the county of IIerkimer ancl State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawer-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to the art of packing furniture.

I-Ieretofore it has been the practice in shipping desks which have draw-cases extending above their writing-bede and flexible curtains or lids for inclosing said cases to remove the small cl rawers and such other drawers as are not provided with locks from their respective compartments in the cases and pack the same With paper-and eXcelsior in the large drawers of the desk, this being done in order to prevent the said drawers from dropping out of their conipartments in transit and marring themselves and the writing-bed of the desk, which in fine desks is highly polished. Such packing of the drawers, however, requires considerable time and is further objectionable for the reason that it cannot be depended upon to prevent damage to the drawers in transit, inasmuch as they are liable to be knocked against the walls of the larger drawers in which they are placed.

My invention seeks to obviate the necessity of packing the drawers in themanner stated; and it consists in devices for holding such drawers as are not provided with locks in their respective compartinents, so as to prevent -them from working out and marring` themselves and the writing-bed of the desk, the said devices being adapted to be readily placed in position and being so cheap that they may be thrown away after being once used. VVith the foregoing ends in view the invention will be fully understood' from the following description and claim when taken in oonjunction with theannexed drawings, in wl1ich-- Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a portion of a desk, the small drawers of which are held in their respective compartments by my improved fasteners. Fig. 2 is a broken perspective view illustrating one of the fasteners in its operative position, but not bent against the front of the drawer. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken in the plane indicated by the line :r of Fig. 1, and Fig. ll is a perspective view of one of the fasteners..

In'the said drawings similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the several views, referring to 'which A designates a desk having a draw-case a extendingabove its writing-bed b and provided with drawer-compartments c and drawers cl therein. The desk also has the usual flexible curtain or lid c for inclosing the drawcase a, and the drawers (Z are therefore not provided with looks.

B designates my improved fasteners for preventing the drawers from Working out of their com partments and becoming marred or other- Wise damaged. These fasteners B, of which one is used in conjunction with each drawer CZ, are respectively formed of a piece of metal (preferably pliable sheet metal) of about the proportional size shown, and they are' each provided adjacent to one end with a barb f, the same being preferably struck from the body of the fastener, as best shown in Fig. 4, and being designed to take into the vWall of a drawer-compartment, so as to securely hold the fastener in its operative position.

All of the fasteners are used alike, and therefore a description of the mode of fastening onedrawer will suffice for all.

In using a fastener to secure a dra-wer in its compartment o the fastener is placed against one Wall of the compartment, so that a portion of it extends beyond the face of the drawcase, and its barb f is pressed or driven into such compartment-wall. The drawer is then pushed home in the compartment and the extended portion of the fastener is bent inwardly against the front of the drawer, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and indicated by g. With this done it will be observed that the drawer is held against cas ual movement or displacement by the frictional contact between its side and the portion of the fastener parallel thereto and also by the inwardly-directe d arm g of the fastener, which rests in front of the drawer and is enabled to effectually pre- IOO Vent outward movement thereof. With the drawers secured in their compartments in the manner stated the desk or other article of furniture may be held in any position and may be shipped any distance Without danger of the drawers being displaced. When the article of furniture reaches its destination, the arms g are bent outwardly to a position in alinement with the remainder of the fasteners and the drawers are drawn from their compartments, after which the fasteners are removed. The removal of the fasteners may be accomplished as easily and expeditiously as their placement, and by Virtue of their insignificant cost they may With propriety be thrown away after being once used. After the fasteners are removed, as stated, the drawers are replaced in their compar'tments and are then ready for use in the ordinary manner.

My improved fasteners may be used to ad- Vantage for securing the drawers of Various articles of furniture against displacement When such articles of furniture are shipped,

and I therefore do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to using them in conjunction with the draWer-compartment and drawers of a desk or to using them in conjunction With any particular kind of drawers.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim is- The combination with an article of furniture having a draWer-compartment and a drawer therein; of the pliable Sheet-metal fastener interposed between one wall of the compartment and the adjacent side of the drawer and having a barb seated in the Wall of the compartment and also having the eX- tended portion bent inwardly in front of the drawer, substantially as specified.
