J.DOUGHTYQ UMBRELLA RIB.
Patented Jan. 11,1898.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY Q UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
J OHN DOUGIITY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA-RIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,105, dated January 11, 1898.
Application filed December 24, 1396- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DOUGHTY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Ribs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in umbrellas; and it consists more especially in novel means for attaching the stretcher to the umbrella-rib, provision being made by my invention for attaching said stretcher in such manner that the rib is not weakened, and the stretcher is enabled to be folded closely upon the rib, so as to be practically concealed within the latter, thereby enabling the umbrella to be rolled much more closely than heretofore.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an umbrella-rib with the stretcher and its adjuncts removed. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section through the rib, showing the position the parts assume after being assembled when the umbrella is open. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the rib, showing the position the parts assume when the umbrella is closed and the stretcher folded upon the rib. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a sleeve employed, the same being shown in detached position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the umbrella-rib, the same being of channeled shape and the sides of said rib being provided with the recessed portions B, which are located in substantial alinement with each other, as will be best understood from Fig. 1.
C designates a sleeve employed, the same having a base or body portion D, which is adapted to contact with the umbrella-rib, said sleeve being provided with the sides E, which engage the sides of said rib, the portion 0 of the said sides E being adapted to be turned inwardly, and the lips F, which are adapted to be turned or folded upon themselves, so as to form hooks, which engage the inner surface Serial No. 616,842. (No model.)
of each side of the rib when the parts are assembled, as seen in Fig. 2.
II designates a stretcher, the head of the same having an opening H therein, said opening when the parts are assembled being in alinement with the opening E in the sides E of the sleeve 0, said stretcher being pivotally attached to said sleeve by means of a pin G, so that the inturned portions 0 of the sides E contact against said stretcher and act as a guide therefor in order that the same will always move properly, and especial attention being called to the fact that said pin is located near or rests upon. the walls of the rib, and preferably at or near the deepest point of the recesses B, so that the head or extremity of the stretcher H is located as far as possible within the 'rib A, whereby when the umbrella is in closed position or the stretcher folded, as indicated in Fig. 3, the head or extremity of the stretcher, as well as the entire portion of the latter, will be concealed within the sides of the rib, thus enabling the umbrella to be rolled much closer than heretofore.
It will of course be understood that changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have-herein shown and described.
It will be apparent that any means may be employed for forming the recessed portions 13.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"
An umbrella-rib having a channel, recessed portions in the walls of said channel, a sleeve having a body portion, sides thereon, lips adapted to engage the walls of said channel, a stretcher having an opening therein, a pin passing through said opening and through openings in the side of said sleeve and hearing against the walls of said recessed portions of the rib, portions of said sides being turned inwardly and acting as guides for said stretcher.
