COLUMN OR POST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,217, dated December 28, 1897. A li tion fil d December 18, 1896. Serial No. 616,227- (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. RAPP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Columns or Posts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the construction of a column or post for architectural or structural purposes and one which, among other features, possesses the quality of being fireproof.

I will describe a column or post embodying the features of my improvement, and then point out its novelty in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a column or post embodying my improvement, the middle portion of the same being broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section through the column or post.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.

The column or post constituting the subject of this invention is of built-up construction, the various parts forming the complete article consisting of sheet metal of suitable dimensions.

In carrying my invention into effect I employ for the center of the column or post T- bars made of sheet metal and consisting each of a yoke-shaped web portion and laterallyprojecting flanges, as fully set forth in Letters Patent No. 557,147, granted to me March 31, 1896, to which I refer for a more detailed description.

Each column or post A preferably comprises four of these T-bars, as shown in Fig. 2. Two of these (marked B B) are arranged with their outwardly-extending flanges b in juxtaposition. Preferably a strengtheningstrip 0 is secured within the bars B B, as by pinching the same between the bars, or it is held in place in any other suitable manner.

D D designate two additional T-bars arranged on an axial line at right angles to that of the bars B B.' The flanges b of the T-bars' B B are firmly secured to the T-bars D D, resulting in a rigid column or post. A finished appearance is imparted to the article by inclosing the interior T-bars within an outer envelop E, of suitable material, which may be circular in outline or corrugated, as thought desirable.

The space inclosed by the envelop E and base G will of course be provided for the column.

Having described my invention, what I consider as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A column or post comprising a number of T-bars consisting each of a yoke-shaped web and laterally-projecting flanges, two of said bars being arranged with their flanges in juxtaposition, and other bars on an axial line at right angles thereto, substantially as described.

2. A column or post comprising four T- bars consisting each of a yoke-shaped web and laterally-projecting flanges, two of said bars being arranged with their flanges in juxtaposition, and two arranged at right angles to said latter bars and inclosing the flanges thereof, substantially as described.

3. A column or post comprising four T- bars consisting each of a yoke-shaped web and laterally-projecting flanges, two of said bars being arranged with their flanges in juxtaposition, a strengthening-strip inclosed by the web portions of said latter bars, and two bars arranged at right angles to the firstnamed bars and inclosing the flanges thereof, substantially as described.

4. A column or post. comprising four T- bars consisting each of a yoke-shaped web and laterally-projecting flanges, two of said bars being arranged with their flanges in juxtaposition, and two at right angles to the first and inclosing the flanges thereof, and a surrounding casing, substantially as described.
