J. R. WEATHERSBY.
HAMB.
No. 581,636. Patented Apr. 27, 1897 llNTTn STaTns ATENT Trice.
JOHN R. XVEATHERSBY, OF SUTTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
MAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,636, dated April 27, 1897. Application filed September 17, 1896. Flerial No. 606,111. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JOHN R. W EATHERSBY, of Sutton, in the county of Franklin and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hames; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention pertains to hames; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device for attaching thereto the tug-hook and breast-strap ring.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hame provided with my improvement-s. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position of the securing-bolt when being removed.
The hame A is provided with three or more separated but alined staples B, between which are formed spaces for accommodating at the desired adjustment the tug-hook 0. Rod or bolt D extends vertically through staples l passing through the eye of the hook and holding the same in the desired position. The bolt adjacent its lower end is formed with the bend or crook E, and adapted to pull against the bolt in this bend or crook is the breaststrap ring F. The bend in the bolt prevents the hook from sliding down upon the ring and binding the same. The bend also constitutes an additional securing means for retaining the bolt in proper position, for in order to remove the bolt it must be turned to the posh tion indicated in Fig. 3, with the bend E extended backward toward the hame, so as to pass downward through the lower staple B after the nut D of the bolt has been removed.
By means of the simple adjustment herein shown and described the trace-hook may be conveniently adjusted from one space to another between the staples, and when in the lowermost space it is held from engaging and binding the ring by the bend in the bolt, and thus the action of the ring is unimpeded.
\Vhen the bolt D is in the posit-ion shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the head a at the lower end of the bolt is sufficiently large to prevent inward movement of the bolt by its engagement with the hame A, thus preventing the bolt from being moved downward, owing to the bulge E engaging the lower staple B, as will be readily understood. \Vhen, however, the bolt is turned in the position shown in Fig. 3, the bend will pass freely through the lower staple, as shown.
I do not claim to be the first to provide a vertical adj ustment' upon the hame for the trace-hook, but
lVhat I do claim, and desire to Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a hame, staples, a bolt, and two lateral extensions on the bolt, one extension adapted when turned outward to overhang one of the staples and the other extension arranged beneath the staple and adapted to engage the hame and prevent the first-mentioned extension while outturned from clearing the staple, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the hame, staples extended therefrom, a bolt having a lateral extension adapted when turned outward to overhang one of the staples, and a head carried by the bolt adapted to engage the hame and prevent the said extension in its outturned position from clearing the staple, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a hame, staples, a bolt having a lateral bulge adapted when turned outward to overhang one of the staples, the head for the bolt beneath the staple and adapted to engage the hame and prevent the bulge while outturned from clearing the staple, and the breast-strap ring in the bulge and adapted to pull outward thereon when in use, substantially as shown and described.
at. The combination of the hame,tl1e staples, the bolt having the lateral bulge adapted secure by when turned outward to overhang one of the latter from engaging the ring, substantially IO staples, the head for the bolt beneath the as shown and described. staple and adapted to engage the heme and In testimony whereof I affix my signature prevent the bulge while turned outward from in presence of two witnesses.
