UNITED STATES PATENT- Orrion.
FRANK HARVEY ZENT, OF COLUMBUS,OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO D. J. MINTON, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 580,824, dated April 13, 1897. Application filed September 21, 1896. Serial No. 606,512. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK HARVEY ZENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved pin for use in connection with the type of car-coupling of which that popularly known as the J annoy is an illustration. Pins as heretofore constructed have been objectionable'because of their liability to be jolted or worked out of their seats.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 illustrates an elevational view of the latch side of the pin. Fig. 2 is an elevational view looking at the right-hand side of what is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cap and latch, and Fig. 4 is an elevational View of the right-hand side of what is shown in Fig. 3.
The characterl on the drawings designates the main portion or body of the pin, which has an offset portion 2, with its base inclined, as shown at 3.
The upper portion of the pin is hollow, and upon this fits a cap 4, having a downwardlyextendingprojection 5, upon which is pivoted a latch 6, the point of which works in and through a hole 7 in the face of the oifset 2. The projection 5 is made with avertical slot 8, through which and the sides of the body cap to the body portion 1.
of the pin is passed a bolt 9, that secures the This slot allows a slight vertical play of the cap with respect to the body of the pin, so that the cap may be lifted to pull the point of the latch into the hole, thereby permitting the free movement of the pin in its seat in the draw-bar. The cap has at its top an eyepiece 10, by which the pin maybe operated either by hand or by means of a cranked lever extending to the side of the car.
When the pin is lifted at the eyepiece 10, the latch 6 is drawn in and the pin may be dropped into its place in the draw-bar. The weight of .the cap will then project the end of the pin under a shoulder in the draw-bar and prevent its being jolted or worked up or otherwise removed until purposely done so by hand.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described pin for car-couplings comprising a body portion 1 having a hole '7, and a cap 4 having a slotted projection 5, a latch 6 pivoted to said projection, and a bolt passed through the slot or projection 5 and engaging the walls of the pin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HARVEY ZENT.
