J. H. BROWN.
UOMBINATION FENCE TOOL.
ted Sept. 7,1897. Y
UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN H. BROWN, OF MALTA, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION FENCE-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,524, dated September 7, 1897',
Application filed May 25, 1897. Serial No. 638,111. (No model.)
To all whom it may con-corn:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malta, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Fence-Tools and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to fence-tools, and the object is to combine in one simple and inexpensive tool ahammer, a wire-cutter, and a staple-drawing claw.
With this objectin view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hammer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view through the handle.
In said drawings, 1 den otes the ham mer .provided with a claw 2 and a driving-head 3.
4: denotes the handle, which is inserted through the eye of the hammer and secured therein.
5 denotes a staple-drawing claw having a shoulder 6 and a shank '7. The shank 7 is adapted to slide back and forth through the eye of the hammer, and the shoulder is adapted to fit in a recess 8, f0rmed in the head of steadying the claw in the act of drawing a staple, I provide a band 13, which is secured to the inner end of the shank of the claw and embraces the handle of the hammer and has a sliding engagement therewith. The shank near the claw is provided with a wire-cutter lat. In use the wire is placed in the notch of the cutter, the claw placed against a post, and by hammering upon the end of the handle the head will be forced over the cutter and will sever the wire.
A tool thus constructed will be found to be very useful in building and repairing fences, as it combines in one single simple device three separate and distinct tools.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-
1. A fence-tool comprising a handle and hammer, said handle being provided with a longitudinal rib and a series of sockets, a claw having a sliding engagement with the head of the hammer, and provided with a shank having a groove to engage said handle-rib, and a spring-stud to engage said sockets, substantially as set forth.
2. A fence-tool comprising a handle and hammer, said handle being provided with a longitudinal rib and a series of sockets, aclaw having a shoulder adapted to engage a recess formed in the head of the hammer, and having a shank provided with a groove adapted to receive the longitudinal rib of the handle, and a spring-stud to engage the sockets in the handle, substantially as set forth.
3. A fence-tool comprising a hammer and handle, and a claw and shank having a sliding connection therewith, said shank having a wire-cutter adapted to act in conjunction with the head of the hammer for severing a wire, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. BROWN. Witnesses:
IV. C. Asnnw, D. DISNOU.
